Some great performances and an Age Group Award highlight the weekend of racing for Team RunnersConnect

Joe Allen ran the Veteran’s Day Race 10k, finishing this distance in the time of 1:02:33.

We had perfect weather for a race. It was in the 40’s when we started and about 60 degrees at the end. Glad I just wore a T shirt. This is a very tough course in Wheeling, WV with 3 hills (gradual 1 mile, steep 1/4 and steep 1/2) with a nice descent the last 1/2 mile. Know this course very well so was able to pace myself. However, we have a new race director and the course was .14 long. Anyway, ran a very strong race and felt good at the end.

Mike Corker ran the Battersea 10k and finished with a time of 49:38.

7c windy, blue Endorphine Pro 4. Chip time: 49:28, pace 4:57/138 HR. 78.15% age grade. Position overall : 123/414. A very young field, No over 75 or over 70 but 4/12 in 60+. About 6 secs /km slower in second half (4:55 vs 5:01) so some work to do on endurance. Decent last km at 4:57 reaching 3:58 when I saw the finish and the fastest in the 2nd 5k.

After missing most of last year I did comparable 5k, 10k and HM to the last in 2023. Generally I am back up to pace and age grade but looking much better at the HM distance than before. At first glance I look worse at 5k but compared to longer distances this year the 5k was more hilly and at a much higher temp with it having a shorter taper being a “”B”” race so I don’t feel I am particularly lacking at the speed end of the range. The 10k this year was only 14 seconds total behind my PB 10k in 2023 and I feel I could have done better this year had the taper/ bug issue not been there. A decent comeback year and ready to improve in 2026.

Ted Nourie ran the Novant Health Charlotte Marathon and finished this race in the time of 3:58:40.

First off, beautiful day in Charlotte, NC, for a Marathon. I felt like I was in better shape than I have been in years. The race started great. I have a perpetual hip/hip flexor issue that did not really begin to bother me until about mile 8. That was good for me. After that, I had to stop and stretch it about 4 times during the race. The course was very hilly for me (coming from flat Chicago), but somehow, the hills did alleviate the hip pain during parts of the middle of the race. Inevitably, the hills got the better of me, and I hit the proverbial wall at about 22 miles. I could not keep up the pace, especially on the hills.

I was not super happy with the results after the race, but upon reflection, I am satisfied with the results. I placed 3rd in my age group, so I am smiling about that. I am not sure how many of these races I have left in me, but I feel blessed that I can still train for a full season and complete each marathon race.
