Team RunnersConnect begins May with a bang as athletes notch 4 PRs and several Age Group Awards over the weekend

Michael Istre ran the Red, White, and Run 5K and finished this distance in the time of 21:50.

Weather conditions were 68F and 80% humidity, sunshine, no wind to speak of. This was a small-town race of less than 75 people.

Started the race at the front with a group of about 15 people. Quickly noticed the whole group was going way too fast at a pace of 6:45. Pulled back a bit and slowly passed people over this first mile and finished at 7:06.

I felt like I could push mile 2 a little bit more then the first one, so I opened up a little bit. It was around 1.5 miles that found I was running in the 5th position and caught up with #4, finishing mile 2 with a time of 6:52. Heartrate was pushing 183 and I knew I couldn’t hold that effort for the full distance left.

Mile 3 I had to pull back because I couldn’t hold sub-7 minute pace. I did pass #4 during this mile and battled #3 to the finish line. Over the remaining 3/4 miles, I used quick surges to try to gain some advantage and finally was in the #3 position and caught up with #2 with only 200m to go. I finished that remaining 200 with a pace of 6:51 but couldn’t get ahead of #2.

Finished the race 3rd overall and 1st in AG 40-49. Overall pace was 7:01/mi. My goal pace for this race was 7:15/mi.

I’m really happy to finish that much ahead of my goal pace and to finish with an average HR of 179 and max HR of 189 tells me I gave it almost everything I had today.

Happy with the run. Now to change from racing mindset to moving mindset. Here goes!!

Olivia Bobb ran a Half Marathon and finished with a time of 1:44:54, which was a PR by 17 seconds per mile!

Stayed on track with time, PR.

Ryan Stigile ran the Capital City Half Marathon with a finishing time of 1:40:34. This was a personal record by 15:15.

My first race with RC! Took 15 minutes off my previous half marathon time. The last few miles felt like real work. But continued to trust the plan. An intentional training plan made such a difference.

The last couple months of work have been incredibly busy. Many days, I was running at 11pm after work. If it weren’t for the plan, I’m not sure how well I would have stayed up on my running.

Very grateful for the RC coaches! You all prepared me well will a great plan and great answers to my questions along the way.

Looking forward to the next one!

Leslie Ziegel ran the Fitually Half Marathon and finished this race in the time of 1:49:03.

Fun race today. Haven’t done a half in over 20yrs. The course was challenging due to the rolling hills (it’s very flat where I live) the rain and wind made it interesting as well. All in all a great experience for the first time back. 50th of 210 overall, 7th of 92 women and 2nd in age group. I shall not complain.

Tony Collins ran the Eugene Marathon and completed this race event in the time of 2:57:35. This was a massive personal record by 10 minutes!

10 minutes PB, first time to go sub 3 and 2nd place in age category. Great day! Last 4-5K’s are always hard but I was very pleased to stay on pace.

The RC podcast and pace calculator were very useful reference. I let myself run to feel and effort, which worked well. I used the pace group but only where it worked for me.

The training schedule worked! A big thank you to Andie for her help and valuable advice. Much appreciated!

Good luck everyone. Those hard efforts mid week pay off over time.

Steve Mcrae ran the Mississauga Marathon and finished in a time of 3:14:29. This was a huge personal record by 12:24.

3rd marathon. Big 12:24 PR and first BQ with a 5:31 buffer. 12:26 faster than a marathon I did back in September (hot day).

Quads are good and sore now, but felt pretty good for most of the race. Felt a shoelace too tight across the top of my foot, tried adjusting it quickly around 5k in but not success. Also started feeling my achilies on that foot, not painful but noticeable. Had a few kms too fast in the first 15k (was feeling too good 😎) so I slowed down to around 4:40 pace for a few kms because there was still so much race left and wanted to finish strong or at least not slow down this time. Halfway through I was still feeling good, but was getting bored and had to battle mentally, I picked up the pace just a little again. Was feeling the quads in the mid 30’s and took it one km at a time. With about 7k left I was pretty confident in a good finish. The last 5k were a tough haul though with the cold East wind off the lake and rain. Happy to have 41.2 to 42.2 be my fastest pace of the day instead of my slowest 😁

Congrats to my wife on her half PR and thanks for waiting around for me in the cold and rain. Now I guess I do a couple weeks of marathon recovery and then a couple weeks of 50k taper 😜.

Jessica Kerrigan ran the Broad Street Run 10 mile, finishing this distance in the time of 1:21:57.

Good news first: I did better than I expected! This was my first race in years, and I just wanted to be under 1:30 (8:30 pace or faster). Hitting 1:21 (8:11 pace) was awesome, and I felt strong the whole time. Even finished pretty high for my division and gender! More good news: I was aiming for negative splits and wicked it up in the last few miles, hitting mid to high 7’s in the last two. Additional good news: my right leg hurt a bit, but not like when I was injured a few years back. It felt really, really good to run fast and not have my glute screaming in pain. All this, despite having zero time to warm up.

There is one thing that’s bugging me. I finished the race feeling like I’d held back…out of fear. In the beginning, I was telling myself to run smart and save my speed for the second half. But as the end got nearer, I hit some kind of mental wall. When I crossed the finish line, I didn’t feel like I’d used up everything in the tank, which is kind of what I expected of myself.

Even so, I am super happy with my results and grateful to the RC coaches and community for all your guidance and support over the last few months. I’m a better runner today than I have been in many years, and it’s due, in large part, to how much I’ve learned and grown by being part of this community. Many, many thanks to @ruairi, @fionaokeeffe, @christopherknutson, @jonknutson, @vivek and Coach Andie (@profile?) for all your words of encouragement and advice.

Jaime Castellanos ran the Boston Marathon with a finishing time of 3:38:00.

Best experience ever as far as the marathon itself, great town and people I really enjoyed it. The race was not my best, actually it was very hard. Could not train as I wished as I was recovering from an injury and had to skip many work outs, I just wanted to be there and I luckily I made it. I made a big mistake of running the 1st half way too fast, I knew I shouldn’t do this, but with all the energy and the downhills I just didn’t realize how fast I was going…, I think I finished the 1st half in 1:32!!, that was crazy. Second half and going into the hills was very hard, 1st time ever that I started cramping. Had to walk at times, and had to stop for a minute only 100 yards from the finish line because the cramping!, I finished in 3:38, 31 minutes slower that my BQ!. It was hard but I really enjoyed it, amazing crowds, I just want to come back sometime in the future (need to qualify again somehow). Now time to recover, let the injury heal and I’m running NYC in November, it will be my first time!

El Jones ran the Lt Szczerba Memorial 5k and completed this distance in the time of 22:55.

I started off great. Smokes first 2 miles. I had no idea we had to go up Monkey Hill in mile 3. It’s in Brandywine Zoo by the monkey house and it’s a brutal 1/4 mile uphill but what makes it really bad is that it’s cobblestones! 😳 Any way I actually ran well enough to take overall female (nobody fast showed up!) so I guess I can’t complain! Piriformis didn’t even bother me thanks to the stretching and strengthening program from RC. Thanks coaches!! ❤️❤️❤️

Robert Stumpe ran the Lincoln Half Marathon and finished in a time of 2:02:15.

Sadly this was not a PR, my fastest time remains 2:01:17. So I’m still chasing a sub 2hr half. But I will say, for the first time, this race felt great. This was my 6th half and the 1st time I wasn’t hunting for the finish line around mile 11 or 12. I picked it up half way through and kicked it into another gear at mile 10. Ran strong to the finish and could have kept going. Super proud of these splits.

Janelle The ran the BMO Vancouver Half Marathon with a finishing time of 2:14:31.

Not a PR but my second fastest time ever. And my fastest after having kids!!! After two pregnancies I NEVER thought I could get back to my previous pace. So I’m feeling pretty good! Next one will be a PR!

Michael Moore ran the Fitually Marathon and finished with a time of 4:35:37.

Challenging, hilly course. Weather was warm, 10 mph wind. Good crowds.
