Joe Allen ran the Summer Sasquatch 10 mile and finished this distance in the time of 2:55:11.
This is a classic trail race with continuous hills (many pretty steep) throughout the course. What made it even more challenging than normal is that we had a tornado warning last night and it rained throughout the night so the trail was muddy and the streams we ran through were up to your ankle.
I always enjoy this race because you’d better focus on your footing and not your pace or watch or you’re going to meet the trail face to face. It was clear from the beginning that this was no day for a PR, so I settled in to walking the uphills. I’ve done the race many times and was able to pick up the pace in the second half, passing many who had gone out too hard. Finished 40 out of 64 and as the oldest runner (which they announced at the starting line) was happy with the result– particularly that despite several slips and stumbles, didn’t fall and finished without any injuries.
Bruce Bergeson ran the Utah Valley Marathon and finished with a time of 4:25:23.
The day was clear and beautiful. I love running out of the Wasatch mountain canyons. It was an unusually warm day at the finish line. I am 61 now. I really want to run for many years into the future.
Katharina Wang ran the Bank of America Chicago 13.1 Half Marathon and finished this race in the time of 1:42:32.
Overall, I’m just happy that I went in with reasonable expectations for myself and let go of things I couldn’t control. The weather gods gave us a warm, humid day and there was not a single spot of shade on this course. This meant it fell into my race bucket of “figure out how to survive.” I ran the first half about 30 seconds slower than race pace and felt really good coming into the half. Planned on picking up the pace, but the sun was relentless and I pretty soon after felt like I needed to dial it back again. The last 5k was brutal I was just hanging on until the end. Today was a kick in the face kind of start to summer running, but as they say….summer miles make for fast fall miles.
Beth Montgomery ran the NYRR Mini 10k and completed this distance in the time of 1:00:56.
It was a hot day, the race organizers flew yellow flags and advised us to slow down. I felt good through the first two miles, but then I started to overheat and slowed down. I started to feel better and sped up again, but at mile 5 I felt hot again and slowed. There wasn’t a lot of water or misters on the course, and I found it hard to regulate my body temperature. I should have trained on more hills, my legs got tired at the end. This was the best I could do on the day, and that feels good.
