7 Personal Bests highlight the great weekend of racing for Team RunnersConnect

Richard Costen ran the Park Run – Dartford 5k and finished this distance in the time of 21.00. This was a PR by 1 minute 30 seconds!

I did this as a part of the 8 mile workout so thought I would just see what happens. I started out for the first mile at about 7 Min Mile then increased pace to about 6:45 then settled in with 2 guys that were moving well, then in the last 1/4 mile took them both as I increased effort to 6:30 ish. A nice strong finish with 4th place. Then went on to run my next 5 miles at the prescribed work out pace. Very pleased with the result, just need to break 20 mins now.

Mike Furlough ran the Dexter-Ann Arbor Run Half Marathon and finished with a time of 1:52:51. This was a new personal record by 10:30.

Race day = heavy rain day pretty much every year for the Dexter-Ann Arbor Run and 2018 was no exception. This is my benchmark race to measure progress. Official time has me 6 seconds slower than my watch, but it’s still a significant PR: I broke 2:00:00 for the first time and beat my previous time on this course by 10:30. I went out too fast, but was able to dial it back enough that I could stay consistent through the 10th mile. There are a few really sharp, steep hills on this course, and it ends with a 3% grade for about a half-mile. I was afraid I’d left it all behind me, but I still managed to surge and finish strong. I had some hamstring soreness and attendant anxiety in the week leading up to this race, but in the end I pulled through thanks to the encouragement of the RC community and coaches.

Fred Beers ran the Polly’s Run 5k, finishing this distance in the time of 20:20.

The cause of the race was to raise money to fight pancreatic cancer. The race was named after Polly who was killed by pancreatic cancer. Polly was an avid runner and track coach. So it was nice to help raise money for a great cause. I didn’t PR unfortunately but it was an enjoyable race although it was really windy.

Carol Plummer ran the Dam Yeti 50 and finished this race in the time of 8:16:28, which was a PR!

This race was a PR because it was my first 50 miler. I was also the 1st female finisher!! This was one of the hardest things I have ever done. I was so tired and sore at the finish line. Everything muscle in my body hurt. But I was so proud of the accomplishment.

Carmen Lopez-Acevedo ran the Liberty 10km and finished in a time of 52:13.

10km race. Quite a few girls from my running group turned up so it was good fun! Targeted 190W on Stryd and managed exactly that so happy with the execution, and 40 second course PR from last year. It was hot and a bit humid, but I think I am finally acclimatising to the heat. The course is quite hilly. The only negative thing is that Stryd is overestimating distances again, I used the race app and hit the lap button at km markers and it seems to be overestimating 40-50 metres each km. This is consistent with Stravas estimation of 10.2km for the race, as opposed to Stryd 10.45km. I certainly gave it my all, power in last km the highest at 195W and had some dry retching at the finish line which is never nice but indicates effort 110% 🙂

Terry Whelan ran the State Street Mile race and finished with a time of 6:21.

A fast course with a competitive field. Not a PR but a good strong age graded result.

Julio Caliman ran the MARATONA CAIXA DA CIDADE DO RIO DE JANEIRO Half Marathon and finished in 1:57:03.

This was supposed to be a “recreational” tune-up race. I come from a month of back issues so I decided to go easy, along with my 72 years old dad and my sister (in her second HM). Even though I knew it wouldn’t be a PR I was willing to give my best shot and to try maybe a sub2h. This race is one of the biggest races in Brazil. The HM was super crowded, with roughly 15,000 people. Two things are a constant in races in Rio. A gorgeous scenario and the heat. As the race started at 6:30am, heat was tolerable, but hard in the end.

I felt I could keep a 5:30 5:40 pace, maybe faster and luckily I did. I finished it in 1:57:03 making a sub 2h and my second best. I’m proud with my result and I’m in better shape than I thought I was!

Megan Fitzpatrick ran the REVEL Rockies Marathon with a finishing time of 3:27:48. This was a personal record by 3 minutes!

This was a fun race with old running friends! I was worried about the downhill and the altitude, which were both pretty intense, but just made sure that I was taking it as easy as possible to mile 20! I’m excited for a break, but ready to set new goals 🙂

Shirley Brown ran the Philly Run Fest 5K and finished this distance in the time of 26:55. This was a PR by a minute per mile.

It was my first race that I had really trained for. I listened to my coaches and I wanted to see how my training had improved my form and pace. I did great. Feel great afterwards and I don’t feel any of my injuries coming back.

Howard Shelburne ran the Italy Run 5 Mile and finished in a time of 36:50, which was a PR!

I have never been a competitive runner, so this was my first 5 miler. It was a great experience being in a race with 8,000 competitors! Definitely a different running experience from what I am used to.

Jon Knutson ran the Asics Stockholm Marathon with a finishing time of 3:30:46.

I was supposed to run my second marathon back in October, but ended up in surgery instead. It was a long recovery, but I thought I came back strong from it. Still, I had a lot of anxiety going into this, my second marathon. That was compounded by the fact that it turned out to be an extremely hot day, especially for someone who doesn’t do well in the heat.

I am very happy to have finished (running) on my feet on a day when it looks like around 5000 did not finish, including the 3:15:00 pacer. So it wasn’t the race or result I had trained for, but it has renewed confidence in myself, having pushed through a hard race, while running smartly.

Stu Altenhaus ran the Running of the Bulls 8K and finished with a time of 55:11. This was a new personal record by 5:00.

I love running in downtown Durham. With the exception of one major thoroughfare, there is plenty of shade on the course. 69F 93%H. Race start with a ÂĽ mile incline, then has rolloing hills thereafter until mil 4 where there are 2 steep inclines.

My A goal was 55:00; B goal was 57:00; and C was 59:59. Previous fastest race on this course was 1:00:21 in 2015. I planned to run the first mile around 12:00 with each successive mile progressing faster. Splits: 11:07, 10:48, 10:46, 12:05, 10:22. I followed the general idea of the plan with 2 exceptions:

1. first mile was a bit faster than planned, but felt like a warmup.
2. fourth mile was a lot slower because I walked up the two inclines

According to Garmin, I was just shy of my A goal. Wondering what the chip time is….55:20.

Monsit Pornnumpa’s feeback:

Using effort is very good strategy. Goal is 55 mins. Start a little but slower than plan 6.11 min/km then 5.30 mins until last 2 kms. Heart rate very high but effort still good. Overall beat my goal for 39 sec. Super happy, beat my pr by 2 mins. Best pace after return from injury. 2 months of training with RC. Thank you all coach. Next goal 50 mins 10k and sub2 21km.

Milan Maca ran Van Gogh Run 10km race and finished with a time of 41:43.

10km race, 41:43, 7th of 166. This was my first time on this course. The start was pretty busy with three shorter distances starting at the same time so it took some time until I was able to run my pace. Remembering recent failed workouts when I started fast and did not manage to finish I planned to start this race conservatively.

When I looked at my watch for the first time I was running a decent 4:10 pace. It felt OK so I stuck with it. From the 4th km I started to reel in other runners. After the first round I still felt quite good and it looked I might finish in a respectable time. From the 6th km I had to work hard for it. In the end the second round was only few slower than the first an I have beaten my 10k PR by 2 seconds.

Few weeks ago I hoped for a better time but today I am quite happy with myself for being able to hit the right pace in the beginning and keep it for the rest of the race.

George Ivan’s feedback:

This was the first green race in Hungary. Because of the big crowd I got stuck after the start I was able to start slowly. Rain is breaking throughout the race. It went well for 5km, but then I started to suffer and my pulse was high. It was so much today, but overall I felt good.

Luis Enriquez Ducoing’s feedback:

A lot of uphill during the first and third splits, but still kept the pace in range. Felt good and tried to close a bit hard. All and all felt pretty good and happy with the result for a training race.

John Sheridan’s feedback:

This half marathon was a hilly course, and Chicago, where I train, is flat, so I wasn’t sure how this would go; it went very well. I ran even effort—slower up hill and faster downhill—walked for ten seconds at 8 water stations to drink, and only ran about 2.5 minutes slower than my PR, which was on a flat course two years ago. HR averaged about 153. This gives me a very good feeling for the Chicago Marathon this fall, since it’s a flat course.

Bill Stintsman’s feedback:

Just as in the past two marathons, the third resulted in late race calf cramps that sideline what would have been a rather nice run. Maintaining a 3:45 to 3:50 pace and feeling good until the calves started their ritualistic shaking and shuttering in mile 17, before giving up during the 18th mile. The weather was clear and sunny, high temp in the 80’s, light winds.

The pace was almost perfect through 4 miles, then I got into a good flow and the pace picked up without even noticing it. Everything was on pace through 16 miles and I felt as if things were looking up, regardless of the heat. Thanks to a steep late race incline, times and pace fell off sharply due to the cramps. Running and walking worked, trying to stop and stretch or massage the cramps did not. If there is any saving grace in this, I beat last years’ time by 29 minutes 20 seconds. However, I missed a PR time by less than a minute. Had the cramps not appeared, this would have been a great finish. I feel real good today. No real soreness, not stiff, no leg pain, and ready to go for a run. Diet and fluids definitely helped there.

Elizabeth Dowling’s feedback:

Race day… felt good, strong. It was a beautiful morning. I started out nailing my pace perfectly. 5.23/ km for the first two kms, then I was at 5:09, so I tried to slow down. Then I was at 6:20. I was all over the place and struggled to get my pace back. By 10 km in, I resolved I needed to write this off as a training marathon…

Priscilla Yang’s feedback:

Time is a 2min improvement over my February HM, 2nd place AG female, but I didn’t make my A or B goals. Despite this, I know there’s been a lot of physical progress with my running. I am so very thankful and happy for this wonderful community of runners and coaches who have helped me get to this point. Many thanks!!!

Melinda DeCosta’s feedback:

Bermuda day half is never about goals times but about loving the atmosphere and enjoying the moment. I did this race as my very first half in 2016 and each year they rotate starting from one end of the island to the other. This year was the same route as 2016 and although a much slower time than my PR I was 6.5 mins faster than 2016.

The route is very hilly and race starts at 9am and it was already 76 degrees. The humidity dropped by the end of the race but the temp was up to 79 which makes those last few miles so tough! I had 3 main goals for this race. 1. No goal time 2. Have fun and enjoy the moment and 3. Be mentally strong and I’m happy to say I accomplished those since I had been struggling mentally in races since my Chicago marathon last October. So overall I am happy with the day and enjoyed it.

Rodrigo Jara’s feedback:

I’m very happy with the result!. The course was about 5.15k, I never ran under 19′ on this course before, I beat my 5k PB by 9 seconds and I even passed 2 guys who beat me in my previous race.

Steffen Lang’s feedback:

Very positive about that since 23s quicker than 1 year ago (just before joining RC), despite very humid and warm. I can clearly feel that I still lack raw speed and lactate tolerance but it is coming. It was a very close finish, just 7s ahead of running buddy, and I have to say that he had a race yesterday and today he was leading full 4 k at a horrendous pace. Really hurting behind him, and could not really open up a big gap. Rescued myself into the finish, I think had mercy with me not to catch me again (he might have could)????. Great fun and great friend. Pretty happy.
