Joe Allen ran the Ohio Hills 10K and finished this distance in the time of 57:10.
I’m coming off a sore knee and wasn’t sure how it would hold up but ran the race with no pain. Although it was 72 degrees and overcast, the humidity was off the charts so breathing was tough. This is an up and back course with a gradual rise leading to a very steep 1/4 mile hill at the turnaround. This is a race I run every year but this time the race director re-measured the course and moved the turn-around point in. I had it at 5.81 miles. The age group for this one is 50 and up, so I was running against runners who could have been my kids but finished 3rd as the only runner over 70.
Christina Kach ran the Narragansett 10K and finished with a time of 55:11.
Since the course was the same 5K loop twice, I took mental notes in the first lap to apply for pacing the second lap. I lined up near the front so I wouldn’t feel the need to weave. I saw that the course banked immediately left, so I started way to the left so I could run the shortest tangent. I held strong until I hit mile 5, was on pace for low 54 high 53..but it hit me, esp at 5.4 I was unable to get myself to go faster. Maturely, at that point, my brain didn’t go right to “you failed” it said “hell, this was a strong race, you are gonna miss it by thiiiiis much.” Oh and did I mention that ~1.5-2.0 miles of the course were on GRASS and LOOSE GRAVEL. I could feel I wasn’t getting the pop off my shoes and leg turn over was harder, so I pretended I was running Cross Country (narrator: she never did cross country and was fully winging this strategy). And my finish line surge returned! Haven’t seen her in a while. I also had more mental pacing gymnastics than I’d expected. The mile markers were NOT in the right spot but rather…creatively near the mile points. I hit 3.1 right at 27:00 on pace for a PR but slight faster than I’d wanted to. But the mile markers were not miraculously in the right spot for lap two, they were also wrong. So I do think I unintentionally went too fast in the first half b/c.
For my 27th 10K, this was my 4th fastest. When I got home I looked at the 3 faster ones, one had a tricky course but good 55 degree weather with no sun, all clouds, and a 7am start. 2 were in disney with ideal temps, ideal courses. Today was 70degrees at 8am, the race had a slight delay and we didn’t start until 8:18. 59 dew point and 71 humidity. So…I guess this is a pr for the conditions? I was runner 145 out of 575, 41 of 300 females, and 14 out of 69 for Females 30-39.
