1 Personal Best and several great finishes in cold weather conditions highlight the racing weekend for Team RunnersConnect

Josh Boyles ran the Go Short, Go Long, Go Very Long 5k and finished with a time of 25:19.

This is the coldest race, and possibly coldest run, that I’ve done thus far. 8 degrees with a -4 wind chill. It was a win just to get out of my warm bed and drive myself to the start line.

Christina Kach ran the Disneyland 5K, finishing this distance in the 30:15.

Well this may have been just the most fun I’ve ever had running a 5K! The course was totally through the two Anaheim Disney parks. The rides and scenery were beautifully lit up in the early morning darkness. I stopped for 4 photos! My Maleficent costume looked awesome. Just a real blast of a race! And my time was was pretty good for just having fun 🙂

Christina Kach ran the Disneyland 10K and finished this race in the time of 54:58.

The weather was perfection for a run. Mid-high 40s, no humidity, no sun bearing down on us. My legs felt SO strong. And most important- I COULD have done it. My fitness was there. I’m taking away from this race that maybe I have finally (after YEARS being stuck in the 55/56 range) am starting to run 10Ks in the 54s.

Christina Kach ran the Disneyland Half Marathon with a finishing time of 2:03:26. This was a PR by 50 Seconds!

The PR! Haha, but other things. I ran so strong. The weather was IDEAL. While miles 5-12 were hecka boring, they were nice and wide and smooth. I was using the manual lap button for splits – since I never accurately line up with the mile markers (My watch said a total of 13.27 – so I did go over .17) but realized, my average pace wasn’t going to be correct. I took out my cell phone and typed a message to a friend who I knew was tracking me and asked her to text me my splits. She will be getting a great big thank you card in the mail – I NEEDED those. Because I needed to see if I was making up the time. Why? Unlike the 10k morning, my half start wasn’t ideal. The race start was delayed by 10 minutes – meaning I lost a full 10 minutes of my pre-race fuel plan. I ended up throwing a few GU chews in my tummy in the corral to top off the tank. Which I was concerned about doing b/c….tummy troubles. Since I woke up that morning. My corral was closed, so I couldn’t make another porta potty run. My only hope was – that it went away when I started moving, or else I’d need a pit stop. It got worse when I started running. At mile 1.5 – a bank of porta porties. No time lost on getting to/from the restroom. Only 40 seconds lost actually going. And WORTH IT. I felt 100% better. But was now a little behind. But I took it in stride, there was lots of race left. And make it up I did!!!!

Zach Jalteco ran the Rose Bowl Half Marathon and completed this race event in the time of 1:16:41.

Going into this race I knew the course would be the most difficult one I’ve ran yet, so I only set effort and mindset goals instead of time based ones. I wanted to push harder and earlier than my last races, and be far more aggressive with the field so I didn’t wonder if I could’ve gone faster afterwards like I usually do.

Had my usual conservative start for miles 1-3, started stepping on the gas at mile 4, and started to hurt by mile 6 but focused on working with more people and making my way through the field.

Ended up negative splitting, closed my final mile with a 5:26, and placed 7th overall! Not my PR but definitely my proudest half to date.

Fred Inklaar ran the Groet uit Schoorl Run 10k and finished with a time of 41:36.

We have seen a bit of snow and sub zero (Celsius) temperatures here in the Netherlands. A fresh batch of snow landed Thursday night, causing the race that I wanted to run to be cancelled. So instead of mounting my bicycle I entered a car this morning to drive 40 minutes west, to a HM that also hosted a 10K and 5K. Getting there was easy and facilities were great!

Conditions outside however were different – chilly and windy. Found a place in the 2nd corral – first corral was for sub 40 which was not my goal.

Got a good start but the wind for the first 4K was brutal. Coming in over the fields (well, more like roads and greenhouses) and because the wind was at an angle and there weren’t that many runners around me I just couldn’t create or hook on to a ‘train’. At 4,5K the course to a sharp turn right on a downhill piece and I suddenly ran a 3:45/km pace!

Managed to find a good rhythm and ran all km’s after that under 4:10, which I needed to do in order to break my 41:29 PR.

Finished in 41:36 – 7 seconds behind my 2020 PR. Not what I hoped for but better than I expected too, for I had thought that my running form had peaked early 2020, just before COVID hit and before I had the chance to convert that form to new PRs. 1:30:22 HM PR can still be broken!
