Team RunnersConnect begins the New Year with strong races and some fun runs bringing in 1 PR

Mark Soo ran the Phae Pa Hiang Trail 30k and finished with a time of 05:00.20.

This is a lovely part of the country and especially at this time of year when the weather is at its coolest. The trail was wonderful and varied. It had muddy single tracks, open sandy tracks, brutal climbs, technical as well as fast downhills and scrambling over rocks. The views were fantastic too. It’s a small organiser but it was well done. Plenty of water, sports drinks and fruits along the route.

I kept the pace steady throughout, walked up the steeper climbs. I notice that I start to feel some pain on my right hip after a lot of steep climbing. This is something I should work on strengthening. I made a mistake close to the finish and turned left instead of going straight on which added an extra 3-4km’s but no drama’s.

Overall a very well organised event and a lovely trail run to kick off 2017!

Dean Morley ran the Parkrun 5k and finished this distance in the time of 18:52.

First race out of 2017 – the local Parkrun which does a traditional NYD run. Great atmosphere as the Kingston run was bolstered by runners (including my wife and I) who had run the Bushy Parkrun earlier that morning.

Dan Cowles ran the Plano Pacers 8k, finishing this distance in the time of 33:02.

This was a tune-up race for HM next month. Felt good about it. First race as a senior (55+) !! Difficult training coming up in January, but I feel that is necessary to reach my goal.

Russ Lilley ran the Winter Series pre-hangover 5k and finished in a time of 27:49.

This was not a 5k PR but it was a course PR by 28 seconds per mile. The course is a roller coaster with about 200 foot elevation gain. I attacked the uphills and recovered on the downhills at a must faster pace. The downhills is where I feel I picked up the pace.

Patrick Callahan ran the Fairfax Four Miler and finished this race event in the time of 35:01. This was a personal record by 7:46.

I started running (walking) in July 2015 and on December 31, 2015 I ran my first race, this one a four miler, finishing in 47:06. The sweeps were not that far behind. I wanted to do better and after admitting to myself I didn’t really know how to put a training plan together I joined RC in late January 2016. Fast forward to December 31, 2016 and in my final and 13th race of the year I finished with a course PR improving by 12:05 min and a distance PR improving by 7:46 min from a 4 miler I ran in March 2016. Although I did not achieve all of my goals this year, one of which was to run a 5K or the 4 miler under 8:00 min/mile, I lost weight, completed a half-marathon, ran 13 races, attended Zap this summer, and have been consistent and committed to my training.

Werner Venter ran the Old Year Run 10k with a finishing time of 0:50:30.

Nice to run on old year. Fun like race. Manage to run well even after 26km long run in the morning.

Carmen López-Acevedo ran the San Silvestre Vallecana 10k and finished with a time of 52:52.

The San Silvestre Vallecana is an annual 10 km road race held on 31 December in Madrid since 1964, with over 42,000 participants so its a very special way to end the year, but not a race where you can PR! Its held in the early evening, I had a great time and managed a 7 minute course PR compared to last year so very happy with my result!

Karen Scobie ran the Silversterlauf 10k and finished with a time of 1:05:14.

My husband and I, with our 2yr old ‘puppy’, started at the back of the pack with two other dog teams. It started out cool and sunny, but shortly after a freezing fog rolled in and it got downright cold. It was a hilly course but a good crowd, and Kobus did awesome in his first race – a nice fun race to round out our year! I also noted when I was going through the race pics that he was the only dog to finish too 🙂
