16 Personal Bests highlight Team RunnersConnect outstanding weekend of racing in all distances

Jonathan Bogaard ran the Good Life Race 5k and finished with a time of 24:51, which was a 16 seconds PR!

This was a repeat of my first ever 5k two years ago. I improved from 34:19 to 24:51. It was a tune up for my goal 5k in May and I ran my race plan well except for a little fade at the end. Cool, cloudy and a little drizzle but I was dressed well and the weather was a net plus I think. I messed up my play list selection and that distracted me a little but I went with the flow and enjoyed the race. Thanks to my RC coaches and teammates.

Phyllis Karsten ran the Morgan Hill Wildflower 5K and finished the distance in the time of 46:36, which was a PR!

I felt like I could break 45 min/mi, but in spite of not making my goal, I had a very good race. I did more running than I have done since I took up this race hobby about six years ago.

After straining a ligament in my knee shortly after I took up racing, my physical therapist advised not to run any more. She was taking into account my age and the fact that I have two hip replacements that are approaching their expected life span. She was the one who got me to investigate Race Walking. I do not want to stop competing in Race Walks, but due to so few of them I enter the open races and have found that I can hold my own with my rapid turn-over race walking style. After x-rays, my orthopedist gave me the green light to run. So now I’m training to pick up the pace with interspersing more running. My next race will be the Sig Sur International 10.6 Mile Run. It will be a tough one, but I expect to complete in well under 4 hours.

Mark Ballou ran the Hollywood Half Marathon and finished in a time of 1:56:08, which was a PR by 48 seconds.

Sub 2hrs. Yay! Ran a conservative & fun race. Probably could have done a sub 1:55, but decide to take it easy in light of barely running the last 3 weeks due to work commitments. Still PR-ed though by a little under a minute. It was rainy and miserable leading up to it. The weather broke and conditions were ideal. Went out there expected to run the first half at my old easy pace (9:45-10), and then go for negative splits for the 2nd half. But when I got out there, I adjusted to what felt like an “easy” effort. Ended up translating into a fairly even pace all the way throughout. Came out of it feeling strong, unlike my previous half marathon PR, where I injured my foot towards the end pushing too hard. This was a “slow and easy wins the race” kinda situation. And it paid off.

Calum McLellan ran the Kirnberg Half Marathon and finished in 1:41:42. This was a PR by 27 seconds!

This was a tune-up race to test my fitness. With almost 400 m elevation gain and loss I was stoked to get a PB. Can’t wait to race on a flat course!

Cody Rickert ran the Run Before You Crawl 5k and finished this race event in the time of 19:18. This was a personal record by 3:17.

2nd Place Overall in this small local race and a 3:17 PR over the last 5k I ran in June 2015.

Ben Tiller ran the Big D Texas Marathon with a finishing time of 3:15:07. This was a new personal record by 6 minutes.

Not a whole lot. Thought I would do better coming from altitude, but I think I got overambitious and ran the first half faster than I should have. On the bright side, I PR’ed both the marathon and half marathon if you just look at splits.

Anne-Lise Vivier ran the City Parks Foundation Run for the Parks and finished with a time of 34:13, which was a PR by 21 seconds!

I did not know that I had more than a few friends running this race! I felt like I was fighting the beginning of a cold and it was freezing, so I didn’t really feel like racing. I am a bit surprised by the PR, but the race went well.

Morgan Daulton ran the Go! St. Louis Marathon and finished this distance in the time of 4:20:15.

This was a really fun race because another RC member, David, was running the half and offered to pace me through half my marathon. Not only that, after finishing the half, he and a friend walked backwards through the course to mile 23 and ran the last 3 miles with me! I’ve never had that much support for a race before! It wasn’t a PR but I wasn’t expecting it to be. My training was not stellar this spring so I’ll be looking to improve in the future.

Ralph Caddell ran the 2016 Fat Boy 5k and finished in a time of 22:47.

This is the biggest and most competitive 5k in this area each year and is a certified course. I got 2nd place in my age group (60-64) missing first by 20 seconds. I forced myself to run the 1st mile a little slower than usual and then had 2 consistent miles leaving another .11. I really felt good and had been chasing a competitor for the last half mile or so. I really pushed the last .11 and overtook the 3rd place age finisher maybe 10 yards from the finish. Covered the last .11 at a pace under 5 min/mile which is pretty much an all out sprint for me. Got really lucky with the weather this year with cool/dry air. Not a PR for me but it was an age PR.

Cynthia Morris ran the Peterson ridge rumble 40 mile and finished this distance in the time of 6:41:22, which was a PR!

This is the longest I have ran in over 10 years. I was nervous about completing this as the last time I had to quit at 35 due to bronchitis. I followed coach Jamie’s race plan. Went out in last (people were running this tough single track trail race like a road marathon) I walked the steepest hills. I fell at mile 7 and rolled my ankle but got up and kept going. Fell again 100 yards later! My ankle got sore but I ignored it. Kept increasing my pace and picking off people. My fueling plan went perfectly thanks to my husband and granddaughter meeting me everywhere they could. After 23 miles there were 2 long (2 plus mile) grinding hills. I ran all of them but the steepest part. Kept feeling strong and kept increasing my pace. And fell 2 more times! (:D Coach jamie wanted me to do a negative split. I hit mike 20 in 3:30 and the second 20 in 3:10 and the second half was harder!! I feel great about starting of my season this way! Especially since this was a “tune up” race! Thank you coach Jamie and RC!!!

James Dunnigan ran the Mountain Equipment Coop 10K, finishing this distance in the time of 44:55. This was a personal record by 3 minutes.

Great Trail Run. My legs felt heavy from the weeks training. So the plan was to run by feel and see what happens. At 4 k feeling good so put my head own and got it done:) my last 10k was 47:47 so happy with the result. Thanks RC

Tom McCray ran the Love Run Half Marathon and finished with a time of 1:36:09. This was a personal record by 4:33.

I followed the RC race plan and was rewarded with an early birthday present; first sub 1:40 Half.

Simeon Bayles ran the Bridge to Bridge Trail Race 5 Mile and finished in 34:16, which was a PR by 90 seconds.

Great race. This race is a trail race of mostly carriage roads with a 1/4 mile single track climb and 1/4 single track decent at halfway which is pretty steep. The last half mile is downhill. Weather was 31 degrees but dry and no wind. I’ve done this race twice before and this was a 90 second PR for me on this course (I’ve run a couple minutes faster for 5M on the road but this is a trail race). This was my first race in the 40-49 age group as I turned 40 last December and I won. 1/23 in my Age group and 16/250 overall. This was also my first race back in about a year. I had a very busy year last year and completely got away from running from May till I got back going again in mid January this year. Thanks to Jeff and Casey for getting me back on track and really pushing me the last 4-6 weeks to get me ready for this race. I have three more races left this Spring and am really fired up for them now.

Kerry Burke ran the Red’s 5 Miler and finished with a time of 59:49.3, which was a PR!

Set up race before planned 10K in June.

Sean Emery ran the Go! St. Louis Half Marathon and finished this race event in the time of 2:07:41. This was a PR by 1 minute!

I was happy I finished as well as I did, I originally was signed up for the full marathon but pulled out because I couldn’t hang with the full marathon training. I also have plantar fasciitis in both feet that aggravated me the last 2 months. But, the race was a lot of fun and well organized. I’m going to try and get my feet straightened out and looking to run another half in the October time frame.

Patrick Callahan ran the Pacers Crystal City Fridays 5K with a finishing time of 29:44, which was a PR!

With encouragement from fellow RC member Fabio decided to run unscheduled 5K race Friday evening with a goal of breaking 30 minutes and finding out where my fitness is. First 5K so I guess it is a PR. Thanks to coaching and support from RC I started fit, ready, and strong and achieved my goal. My plan going in was to hit 6:10 over the first km and push from there while taking the shortest line over the course. Probably could have done a little better if I hadn’t started in the back with the dogs and the strollers as I had to spend some time get through traffic over the 4th km. Two weeks to goal race, a 10 miler, so sticking my schedule the rest of the way.

Paulo Correia ran the International Half Marathon of Sao Paulo City and finished with a time of 1:58:10. This was a personal record by 3 minutes.

I ran this half marathon last year in 2h32m, when I decided to join Runners Connect. One year later, I ran again the same track under 2 hours (1h58). This amazing improvement came after a injury and a 3-month period focused on elliptical sessions to avoid impact.

Today I was in my best shape ever and mentally strong. I learned a lot from the online content we have access and I planned all my half marathon during the night before. I chose 5m50s as target pace to run below 2 hours. I felt a great sense of accomplishment at the end because I was able to execute my plan perfectly. I’m celebrating one year with Runners Connect and I get this gorgeous gift. I must to thank our community and coaches to create this supportive and very informative online community.

Paul Hanrahan ran the Eungella trail half marathon and finished with a time of 2:02:23. This was a massive PR by 18 minutes.

I wanted to see if the RunnersConnect running plan was going to assist me in improving my time from last year. My plan started on the 4th of January, 2016 and it was great to have the notes each day explaining how the task was intended to assist with overall running performance. The trail run was through the National Park on uneven narrow track, hilly and wet underfoot conditions. There was some hill days in my plan, but not a lot. I was concerned that I hadn’t done enough hill runs in my plan, but I was amazed at how the legs responded to the hills and recovered in time for the next hill. A warm up as done as per the run plan recommendation before starting the race. I have never warmed up by running 2 km, stretching, completing a couple of strides, more stretching and was amazed how I felt great at the start of the race. My belief was always to conserve energy before starting a race. At 5 km into the trail run I lost my footing on a wet wooden bridge crossing and fell heavily on my right knee, which resulted in a gash down to the knee cap bone. Didn’t dare look at the knee, just figured if the legs still operated I could put up with the pain. Managed to finish the race taking 18 minutes of the last year’s event.

Looking forward to starting a RunnersConnect plan for a marathon in Melbourne in October this year. Thanks RunnersConnect for the plan for the half marathon and being accommodating to my request to rearrange the plan to suite my schedule.
