Team RunnersConnect has an incredible weekend as athletes record 5 Personal Bests and several Age Group Awards

El Jones ran the Dewey Goes Pink 5k, finishing this distance in the time of 22:58.

My goal for this race was to beat 23:00. I didn’t realize this race was actually 3.25 and I still made my goal! Placed first in age. This a fun LARGE race to raise money for breast cancer. There were 5000 people there and super crowded but the food was amazing as usual and the adults beverages flowed like water! I didn’t have enough room to run the 3-4 post race miles but I did 2 mile warmup. Perfect beach weather. A perfect way to end the summer!!

Sal Adamo ran a 5 Miler and completed this distance in the time of 38:19. This was a PR by 8 seconds!

Chip time 38:19. Apple Fitness had the distance at 5.02 miles. During the last ~1.5 miles I had to weave in and out of the walkers on the course which was annoying.

I warmed up w/ ~1.5 miles plus some pick ups/strides. I ate a lot yesterday and had a banana and crackers around 4:30-5:00a.m. I ate some gummy bears within an hour of the race starting. I felt sufficiently fueled during the race although my mouth was dry. The weather was nice ~70 degrees. I didn’t sleep well – I didn’t feel that bad although my HRV was low.

I was at approx 19:19 at the turnaround so 19 sec negative split or ~1.6%. Overall, I think I paced this well – much better than last year (7:17 first mile and 7:50 last mile). And I think I ran the tangents well. I started feeling lactic acid in my legs at around the 1.8 or 1.9 mile mark. The last mile was pretty hard and I felt that I could barely go much past that.

I am a little disappointed in my time. I thought 38:00 was a reasonable goal and with good weather it should have been doable. I PR’ed by 8 secs although conditions this morning were considerably better than last time. Overall, I just think my potential is much greater than what I am able to do. I’ve been waiting for a big breakout where I drop my time considerably.

Glenn Decou ran a 5k Tune-up race and finished with a time of 31:33.

Great morning for a race. A little windy during the first half but helping towards the end. Thought I might have gone out a little quick the first mile. Just tried to maintain the second mile. Then was able to pick it up the last part. Surprised and pleased with the results. Got an age group win out of eight.

Travis Dowell ran the Las Vegas 10K with a finishing time of 1:03:04.

This was a 10K race on a course with 168 feet of elevation gain, mostly on miles 2 and 3 up to the turnaround at mile 3.1, then it was all downhill or flat. I finished 24th of 76 runners, first in my AG, average pace of 10:10. I was passing some runners and getting passed, but I held my pace up fairly well and considering that no one older than me finished faster, and that I finished fairly high in the race, top 32%, I am happy. Last year I finished in 1:02:09, slightly faster, and 36 of 100 finishers, in the top 36%.

Christina Kach ran the Wineglass Marathon and finished this race in the time of 4:13:02. This was a PR by 7 minutes and 25 seconds!

Beat our goal by 2 minutes! Bringing my cooling towel was a genius move – that SAVED me from miles 17-23. The stranger handing out huge handfuls of ice from those huge (from those $$ gas station bags) for free – I own him a beer. I’ve never raced so strong in the heat. We started at 8am in the low 50s and it worked into the mid-60s. But at mile 17, just about at 3 hours, the temps LEAPT into the mid 70s. And I felt it. I ended up with the 4:15 pace group and pacer Rachel understood the assignment – girl was hitting 9:45 on every mile. All the work I put in paid off – I felt it. Physically and mentally. I executed my fuel plan spot on. Oh and my SPLITS – 2:06:59 / 2:06:02!!!!!

Corrinne Mills ran the Chicago Marathon and completed this race event in the time of 4:41:24.

Not quite a PR but I’m happy with how it went. Pre-race logistics in the starting area were better, and the more-carbs-earlier nutrition strategy paid off, in that I was limited by my legs and the heat rather than my cardio engine or fueling, which is a first for my marathon experiences (5 now, 4x Chicago and 1x NYC). I did have a couple of frustrations on the course. I had to take a bathroom break around mile 6, which with the short queue cost me 4 minutes that I never quite managed to make up. The other is just the reality of being back in corral K in a big race, which is the constant slalom around others, especially at the end when the sun was hammering down on us and there were lots of people walking. % placement similar to last year, my PR (4:40:43).

Gary Perry ran the Melbourne Marathon and finished in a time of 3:10:00. This was a personal record by 5 minutes!

Started the race with a slightly dodgy stomach after suffering indigestion the night before. First 10km was uncomfortable but forced a gel and carb drink down during this time. Came good after that and settled into maintaining 4.30 pace. Felt pretty good until about 35km when I started to tire. Kilometre 37 was uphill and was a struggle, but I pushed hard down the other side to get my momentum going again. 39–41 was tough but I just gritted my teeth and pushed as hard as I could. For the last Kilometre and finish inside the stadium I just went all out with what I had left and crossed the line bang on 3.10. Was hoping to go under 3.10, but satisfied that I gave everything I had. I was able to finish the last km strong, this was my best marathon by far. Thank you for the plan and advice along the way. 👍

Bryan Gallagher ran the Mohawk Hudson River Half Marathon and finished with a time of 1:38:48.

I’ve run to stay in shape but I haven’t trained for then raced over 8 years. I was very happy with my results especially since I had a 2 and 1/2 weeks break 8 miles from race day. I negative split the race.

Mike Corker ran the Royal Parks HM with a finishing time of 1:50:33. This was a new personal record by 5:12.

The plan: Target 1:52, start at 5:20 pace with M for first 10k then see how I feel. Gels at 6, 11, 15 and 19k.

The race: In front of pace over first 10k due to this being flatter section before Hyde Park but felt strong and fully in control. Started to increase pace after that with km 21 at 4:54. Slight negative split despite more hilly in second half. Had to skip 16k gel as stomach not ready.

Result: Chip time 1:50:33, (5:12 pace) HM Watch time 1:49:37. 1st in age cat by 33 min (not much competition). 78%+ age grade. 3734 of 16194 (top 23%).

Comments: Always felt in charge and never as hard as I remember from 2023. (2023 was at 5:24 pace. ) HR was lower at 141 this time compared to 152 in 2023. I had only raced a 5k (in heat) over the last 2 years due to losing most of last year to 2 operations, so difficult to know where I was at now. I previously thought I might have over tapered but am now thinking it was correct as it worked and gave me a comeback PB. I’m thinking the big increase in volume (+ great conditions) might be responsible.

Mike Thompson ran the Chicago Marathon and finished this race event in the time of 3:14:00. This was a personal record by 32 seconds!

Overall a pretty good day. I was shooting for 3:10, but never really felt comfortable. Probably went out too fast because inaccurate GPS splits in downtown Chicago made pacing tricky. Negative splits were not in the cards. I tripped and fell in Chinatown – mile 21-ish. Nothing injured except my pride. A bit of a struggle, but a PR at age 59, I’ll take it.

Beth Montgomery ran the Chicago Marathon and finished this race in the time of 4:55:16.

So close to my pr, only 30 seconds off. I enjoyed the course and the crowd support. When things got tough around mile 18, I found another gear and was able to push past the unease. The slow jog I found myself in was replaced by a faster run that felt better. This was the absolute best I could have done, and that felt so good.
