Christine Lee ran the All-Out Runapalooza Half Marathon and finished with a time of 1:48:09. This was a personal record by 1 minute!
Run was pretty good. I focused on maintaining pace throughout the hot weather. The terrain was flat, and there were some spots with no shade. I noticed that I overstride a bit during hills. Next time, continue to strengthen core and hip to prevent overstriding on hills and maintaining speed during the end of races. Also, the sauna technique helped with enduring the hot weather during the run.
I got 1st place in the Female 30 – 39 category and got a PR during hot weather.
Robin Whitley ran the NYRR Team Champs 5 mile and finished in a time of 1:15:30, which was a PR!
Getting it done and using grit that differed from the fatigue I fought through in 2023. My lower back was a little sore when I got to the start – it usually eases off in the first mile or two. Not this time. By the time I finished, the main challenge was to keep my lower back from spasming (tight core, good posture, no sudden movements.)
Mario Ortiz ran the 13.5 GNC 12k and finished this distance in the time of 1:01:58. This was a massive personal record by 11:59.
After 8 years, I ran this race again: Same course & same distance @ 5000ft elevation. I ran it 12 minutes faster.
Travis Dowell ran the Summer Tuneup 5k and completed this distance in the time of 34:00.
This was the Three Degrees of Hell 5k run at 5 pm on Saturday in Henderson, NV when it was 107°F. Luckily, all of the start area was tree shaded as well as 50% or more of the race route. This is the only race in August in the Las Vegas area that does not involve steep climbs in the mountain areas. The first mile was fairly level through the park sidewalks. Then the trail went under two road bridges and came back up on the other side, and went down to the 1.55 turnaround. On the way back, we were climbing and had to do those two ups and downs near the bridges again, then a fairly level shot all the way to the finish. It was getting hotter each mile, but I did make it passing a few runners and getting passed myself. At the finish I had plenty of watermelon, Gatorade, and a cold beer to cool me off. I made it back home without any ill effects. The results of the race are I was 3rd place of 4 runners over 60, 12th of 21 males, 17th of 38 all runners, and was the oldest runner in the race by 9 years over the next oldest runner. I don’t understand how they recorded 34 minutes for my time. My Apple recorded 31:13 and my Garmin recorded 32:02 because I noticed it was still running after I finished. It would have put me in 11th place of males and 14th place overall if they recorded 31:13.
Tania Quiskamp ran the Perth Half Marathon with a finishing time of 1:59:25. This was a huge personal record by 17 minutes!
Got under 2 hours!
Vijay V ran a Summer Tuneup Half Marathon and finished this race in the time of 1:58:48, which was a PR!
While driving to this tune-up race, I was formulating a race strategy in my head and enumerating all the best and worst case scenarios. Best case scenario was that I would get a 8:20/8:25 with a strong finish. Worst case scenarios included: 1. barely hitting 8:45, 2.my knees acting up (each knee has a different issue, nothing serious but enough to be an irritant after about 8 miles based on recent long runs) 3. not being able to finish strong at all 4. a slight chance of cramps but this was just an afterthought since it was only a half marathon. So cramps were just a very remote possibility in my mind and that just became real! 8 miles into the race, just stepping into the 9th mile, when the going was getting just a little tough and I was trying to mentally recite some mantras, I felt the first sign of cramps in my right calf that I remember very vividly still from my first DNF marathon. And from there the cramps got stronger and my pace got slower. I considered stopping and stretching (which is what I should have done) but then I thought what if the legs seized completely and just continued jogging – the final 200 meters was when I was really in doubt whether I would have to walk or stop entirely but I managed to continue jogging and finished the race under 2:00hrs. I have a 10k coming up on the 17th and hopefully I will be able to get at least 7:50.
