Staying on Top of Your Running Game
It’s been said that “Motivation is overrated; on a good day you don’t need it and on a bad day it never shows up.” With everything we have going on in our lives (work, family, friends, hobbies, life in general) it’s incredibly easy to lose focus on training. And for some of us, it’s also very easy to over-focus on training to the point where a written training plan becomes dogmatic and often creates unnecessary stress in our lives.
On this episode of Run To The Top, we talk with Peyton Hoyal of Running2Win about how to stay on top of your game. It’s a struggle to get there and, often, even more of a challenge to stay where you want to be with your running.
Peyton will share coaching tips on how he brings his clients to their best and helps them stay there. We’ll also talk about the importance of a community of runners to support you. Whether it’s an actual team, a few good buddies, or a running club we’ll discuss the benefits of having other runners for support, accountability, and motivation.
He also shares his training philosophy and some of his favorite workouts and training schedules while emphasizing keeping everything in perspective and allowing flexibility during training cycles.

Quotes by Peyton:
“I like to get a lot of my information first-hand from coaches that I trust.”
“I hate to call it a ‘breaking point’, but think we’ve all had that in our careers where we pushed a little too hard and then 6 months later, we pushed to that same level and kinda wait for the piano to fall on your head and it doesn’t and you end up racing really well. It just takes a little bit of time sometimes”
“Staying on top of the daily needs of athletes is really important. And for someone who’s self-coached, just being honest with yourself. Staying on top of your particular life and not being a slave to your training plan is probably the first recommendation I would make.”
“You need to have very clear goals. If your goals are too scattered or you’re training for too many different races at the same time as a competitive runner, then sometimes you lose track of what you want to accomplish in that 3-4 month period.”
“Put your family first, put your work first. Use the left side of your brain for most of your work and use the right side, the more creative aspect of your brain, for your training. You need to look at your training like a musician would look at their music rather than this hard thing that I have to do.”
