9 Personal Bests and several Age Group awards highlight the excellent weekend of racing for Team RunnersConnect

Rodrigo Jara Piccardo ran the Corrida Paseo la Galería 5k and finished this distance in the time of 18:46.

I ran a negative split the second half of the race, I was able to pass some runners, hit my target pace and kicked the last 200 meters like never before. I won my division and placed 8th overall. 18:12 5k, 18:46 5.19k

Tony Malinauskas ran the Spartan Sprint 5k and finished with a time of 1:07:14.

This obstacle course race was good as a workout for longer obstacle races, but Spartan races stop making their age group divisions in 5-year increments at 50 yrs old and just lump us in a “50+” group. In that group I came in 15th. If there were a 60-64 AG, I would have been 1st by 19 minutes!

Scott Borella ran the Run Wild 5k and finished this race in the time of 20:26.

Just a tune-up race two days after a 5x2k VO2 Max workout. 79 F, 79% humidity, 72 F dew point. Rained overnight, drizzling most of the morning, and the road was slick. Soaked the whole way. 48th overall, 8th age group. Splits were 4:11, 4:11, 4:06, 4:02, 3:53. Pleased with how I ran the race. Need to find some cooler weather to see what true fitness really is and what I can do at this distance. It was cool to find out that a former Olympian won the race at age 52.

Hennie Coetzee ran the Knysna Half Marathon and finished with a time of 1:28:15. This was a personal record by 2:15.

This race is very different to most. The race experience starts with a 20min taxi ride into the forest, if you have visit South Africa you will know taxi in South Africa is way different to elsewhere in the world. We got our taxi at 4:35, race starts at 8am… Next experience- it is 2C and you have 3hr to kill. Luckily the organisers have 2000 blankets, 8500 runners- hence be early. 5 am and I cannot feel my toes. 6am my face is numb. 7:35 am go for a 15min run to try and warm up a bit. Worked very well, 8am start.

Race strategy: 4min20sec/km for first 4-5 km. Got the effort spot on but was a bit hilly so pace was sporadic.
Km5-18: kept the tempo going focusing on keeping it easy. Km14-16 was a very steep hill.
Last 4km: push push push, it really started hurting and my energy levels was diminishing.

All in all a great experience and I am very happy. It was a good test for Chicago, gave me confidence but also a reminder of how much hard work is ahead. Thank you to all the coaches for the advice and may there be many more pb’s.

Kristin Morales ran the Palisades 5k and finished in a time of 26:06:00.

Mile 2 was mostly uphill and it really fatigued me, so my pace slowed but I was 13 seconds faster than last year!

Yolanda Lopez McCurdy ran the Hobbler Half Marathon and completed this race event in the time of 2:30.

Significant downhill half marathon outside Provo, Utah…started at 5700 ft down to 4000ft…6 min faster than San Diego one month ago…felt good holding pace until about mile 7-8 & arted to fade…temp at finish 84…really happy with my results!

Kris Grenier ran the Freeman Lake Distance Challenge 15k and completed this distance in the time of 1:40:20, which was a PR!

While I’m a new runner, I’ve gotten the opportunity to run longer and shorter races, but I’ve not loved another race as much as I loved the Freeman Lake Distance Challenge. Set at Freeman Lake Park in Elizabethtown, KY, the courses take runners along the shore, on a causeway between reservoirs, through shady woods, and in a garden.

The Distance Challenge is comprised of two races—a 10K and a 5K. I finished the 10K with about 25 minutes to spare before the 5K started. I ran my 10K at a slightly faster pace than my 5K, but I felt as though I ran solid/steady/strong efforts in both races. I was thrilled to find myself passing runners and barely getting passed. And, 9+ miles into the challenge, I was amazed to find I had an actual finishing kick! I’ve never found that gear before! (I think running strides and intervals has been hugely helpful in that regard!)

I finished 3/11 in my age group in the 10K, 4/11 in my age group in the 5K, and 2/6 in my age group in the Distance Challenge. I think that what I left feeling most excited about is how I’m starting to normalize the feel of racing. I’m becoming more comfortable (and less nervous) with the routine of getting ready to race and of running strongly for the race’s duration. This year, my running is all about gradually increasing weekly mileage, which I’m motivated to do with the goal of Tunnel Hill 50M as my carrot.

Carrie Miller ran the Kicking it With the Cows 10k, finishing this distance in the time of 49:58:00.

Beautiful weather; running near the college I graduated from; pacing.

Brian Tait ran the Knysna Forest Marathon with a finishing time of 3:29.

Beautiful run through forest. First time doing negative splits on a marathon.

Juan Hilario Lopez Merino ran the Carrera de las estaciones Verano 10k and finished in 47:52:00. This was a new personal record by 1:39.

This is my first race after starting the runners connect training plan, I was confident I could PR, just wasn’t sure by how much. I struggled mentally, I thought I couldn’t keep the pace for the entire race, finally I could.

John Bird ran the Calgary Stampede Road Race 1/2 Marathon and finished in a time of 1:30:02, which was a PR by 6 seconds!

Chip 1:30:02.99, 12th overall, 11th male, 3rd Category (40-49Male), Yay Stampede pancakes!

Tune up race with a self-imposed goal to break 1:30. Headed out and really tried not to rabbit my way into the front of the pack and instead hold a steady, realistic pace. Latched onto a pack of similar paced runners and used them to settle into a rhythm and as a draft. I know the area, so tried to balance the efforts through an initial nasty hill at mile 2-3 on the out and back. Through mile6-7 decided I was feeling stronger and mostly out of the wind. At the turn-around, tried to ride the wind. The pace was reasonably steady on the way back until that same hill, which I wish I’d had more to throw at it. Rounding towards the finish and seeing the gun clock I pushed as hard as I could and just missed the time barely….ugh…

Overall, it was a good run and I think the execution was there. Was feeling last weeks tempos a bit from mile10, and especially over the last hill, so all things considered it went decently. Just wish I’d had 2 seconds of extra fire….

Patrick Douglass ran the The Boilermaker 15k and finished with a time of 1:13:46. This was a personal record by 15 seconds!

Managing the race that I planned and getting a PR, and doing it with friends and my son with me.

Perry Pelham ran the Celebration Run 5k and finished with a time of 23:10.

Good time with family.

Dan Barker ran the Firecracker 4 mile and finished in a time of 30:48:00.

Laurie Householder ran the Hilton Head Firecracker 5k, finishing this distance in the time of 21:15.

There’s a valuable lesson in setting a new goal that gets you excited if you’re lucky enough to hit your 5k goal early in the season! I already had my sub-20 (19:42) race a few weeks ago and just didn’t have a clear goal for this one other than to PR. Well, on this hot and humid day, that just wasn’t enough for me to keep my head in the game. My feet kept slipping on the wet roads behind me which really derailed my mental game early in the race. I have never been so tempted to just stop and walk a 5k as I was this race, so I consider finishing the darn thing without stopping a total win! I think I was probably 6th or 7th female overall, but won the female Masters division and some super sweet gift certificates! My goal for running 5k’s is to get faster at the marathon- to work on those fast twitch fibers. In that respect, this has been a great 5k cycle as I’ve been running paces in training I never thought possible (thanks for RC for challenging me!). Now, on to marathon training! THANK goodness! I’m ready for it!

Beth Wiltshire ran the YSN 4th of July Classic 8k and finished this race in the time of 0:59:47.

Tune-up race 11 weeks out from goal race. It was the hottest race I’ve ever done! My plan to do negative splits was foiled by the extreme heat and humidity. Planning a half Sept. 22, 11 weeks away, with a goal pace of 11:30. Given the heat today, with 11 weeks to go, was happy with the pace of this race. Time to ramp up my “”easy”” walk paces.

Anne Hardy ran the Redwood City parade run 5k and finished this distance in the time of 22:12. This was a personal record by 1:30.

So short compared to races I am used to!

Vincent Hardy ran the Redwood City 5k and finished with a time of 5:36.

Running with Anne and friends! I finished 1rst in my age group and 18th overall, pretty happy about that!

Michael Williams ran the Desbourough 10K and finished in a time of 45:18:00.

Had a great run tonight, came first in my age category in a time of 45:13. Came 21 out of a field of nearly 200 runners. Not a PB but my best time for a 10k race for 7 years!

Cara Shorey ran the Lynnfield 4th of July 5k with a finishing time of 29:06:00.

Just another run with my aunt and it felt pretty good despite being sick the past few days!

David Hume ran the Freedomthon 5K and completed this race event in the time of 21:49.

19/358 overall, 15/144 men, 2/16 age group. Little bit humid, but not that bad.

Kari Ingebritsen ran the Red, White and Boom! 5k, finishing this distance in the time of 27:06:00.

Well, this was an extremely humid day. The race director cancelled the half marathon, but allowed those people to run the 5K or a modified 6.75 K where they would run the loop twice. That meant a lot of people at the starting line and it was crowded. When the race started, it was impossible to set in a pace with all the people. In the end it was a little faster than I wanted, but I felt ok. The struggle hit on mile 2. The first half mile was a large and steady hill over a bridge. This means the wind and the sun were harsh. The down hill was side was sadly short and led to another hill. Needless to say, I struggled. Then we were in a more shaded area and I was finally able to make up speed. I really felt like just stopping, but I saw the final bridge and was able to push through. I thought I could do 27 minutes, and I ended at 27:06. My course best was 27:02, so not too bad.

Nichola Walker ran the Frye Island 5 Mile Race and finished in 41:05:00. This was a new personal record by 4:37.

Despite not achieving my goal time, I improved by 4 minutes and 37 seconds over my time in last year’s race and placed in the top 5 for women and top 15 overall. This is a race I do every 4th of July, so it felt good to achieve such a big course PR. The weather conditions and hills were pretty challenging.

Eric Reichenbach ran the Heroes Challenge Race 10k race in Washugal, WA.

July 4th Independence Day, running a race to raise money in support of our Veterans, carrying our flag from start to finish. I will run it again next year!

Eric Hoyme ran the 4 on the 4th (Elmhurst, IL) 4k and finished with a time of 25:08:00, which was a PR!

Great course. Very well organized race! There were more than 50 people that lined up in the sub-6:00 wave, and they all ran sub-6:00! Very competitive group!

Erika Quinn ran the Titletown Ultra and finished in a time of 5:32:29, which was a PR!

First 50k. First Ultra. Hardest race I’ve ever done. The heat and humidity were ridiculous. At the start (5:10am), it was 82 degrees, and the humidity levels were above 70%. By 10am, it was over 90 degrees. Each loop was 4.75 miles, and there were three aid stations that provided water, gatorade, and lots of ice.

The heat really got to me. I drank about 18oz of water per loop, but maybe it was not enough. Being my first Ultra, I didn’t feel completely prepared. The 5th lap was the hardest. I walked the most during that loop. When I arrived at the start/finish line, one of the race directors took one look at me, and immediately made me go sit in tub, with bags of ice. I knew finishing a 6th lap would get me over the marathon distance, so I was anxious to get out again. I felt better after having the brief cool down. I finished the 6th lap, and knew I had time to get to the second aid station again, which was the 50k mark.

I was about a half mile away from the aid station, when a blister on my pinky toe popped. I hobbled, walked my way to the station, where I had already decided I was going to be done. When I realized what my finishing time was, I thought that I could have maybe pressed onto the finish line, to get 33.25 miles in, but with my popped blister, it would have been very hard. My stride was thrown off already, and it caused my right ankle and quad to be very sore two days afterwards, so it’s a good thing I didn’t push on.

I did the 6 hour run, but there were also runners doing 8 hours, and 15.5 hours. The volunteers were wonderful, attentive, helpful and so positive. Kudos to everyone who ran in that hot, humid, stifling, oppressive weather!

I should be happy, to have completed my first ultra/50k in this kind of weather. However, I did not complete my original goal of 38+ miles (breaking the female record for the 6 hours. I didn’t prepare well enough, and the heat took me down. I almost feel that I need to find another ultra race, to redeem myself.

Adrian Thorpe ran the Uri Triathlon Switzerland 10k and finished with a time of 44 minutes!

Heart Rate too high in the swim and Bike. Made the run tough from the get Go. Was very Happy to beat the reigning Swiss olympic distance 45 age group Champ. Was a First in 6 years of trying. Very good First race of season result. Better than in previous seasons!
