RunnersConnect Crew Sets PRs All Over the World

Another big weekend of races from RunnersConnect members. What made us anticipate this round even more was that some of our more active community members were lining up testing their mettle. The amount of support that evident in the posts is quite remarkable, especially since most people involved have never met and some live thousands of miles apart! Without further delay, let’s recap the globe trotting weekend of RunnersConnect races:

Sang Yim ran a 3:22:11, a PR’d by over 19 minutes at the Albany Marathon. Sang ran a 3:22:11! His big race for the year will be in Chicago in the fall. Prior to Albany, he had only run one marathon and wanted a second one under his belt. Getting a huge PR along with more experience has him well situated for a strong showing in the fall.

Both Richard Marshall and John Pereira ran the Chilly Half Marathon and both finished with a 1:21:58. This was a PR for both, too. The strategy was the same for Richard and John: start out slower and lock into a faster pace later on in the race. Around the 13k mark they kicked it into gear and started passing quite a few people. Mission accomplished!

Philip Sheridan is gearing up for Rotterdam and decided to jump into a half marathon race over the weekend. He ran a 1:22:08, which is an improvement of 14 seconds from last year. Philip “did ok considering the build up for the last week or so” and encouragingly finished three minutes ahead of one of his friends (a 2:52 marathoner who will be running Rotterdam with him).

Sally Vecchiarelli ran a snowy, windy, rocky marathon on the trails. Well, the first seven miles were paved, then it was on to the trails with loose rocks until mile 24. She still ran a 4:14 incredibly!

Danny Tateo was on the line for Coogan’s 5k in Manhattan. The race was packed with talent, but Danny still finished 105th out of 6,000+, and second in his age group (out of over 400). Wow. Danny ran a 17:34 for the hilly, challenging 5k. Overall Danny was happy with his placing but not happy with the way he felt. Hill will do that to you! It’s an impressive performance considering the terrain, the competition and the way he felt during it.

Sweeny Choong ran the Brooks Half all the way over in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Sweeny provided a real ‘chiong hei’, which is a a long-winded report (for those of you who aren’t fluid in Cantonese like Sweeny and I are). She had the pre-race jitters a bit, but had that second place position on her mind. Sweeny unfortunately didn’t PR, but she overcame some pace struggles (due to the hilly terrain) and still placed second in her division and third for women! Three seconds ahead of her was a woman who was almost two decades younger. Next time, Sweeny, she’s all yours!

Matt Garvey ran the Patuxent River 10k. It was his “slowest 10k ever, just as planned”…in other words, the perfect race! The race was on trails, his ankle held up and he kept it slow and steady. Sometimes it’s even harder to keep things in check, especially in a race on terrain that you love, so it’s no small feat.

Robert Islam ran a half marathon in Italy and “kicked the half in the butt.” Robert ran a 1:22:23, which was just over a seven minute PR. That’s a big time drop!

Congrats to everyone who raced! There were some big accomplishments there and we enjoyed reading up on all of your results. Keep ’em coming! We’re looking forward to next weekend already.
