Race winners and massive PRs highlight the first week of June

It was another succsful weekend of racing for the RunnersConnect team. The week started on Tuesday with a solid training session for Brian Schmidt at another installment of the Luke’s Locker All-Comer Track & Field Meets. Brian paced a mile race with his son and followed it up with a quick 2:14 in the 800. This week he’ll be taking a crack at the 1500.

Newlyweds Brent Frissora and Eva Wang had a huge week of racing. On Thursday they ran the Wall Street 3-miler and Eva ran a nice PR of 20:04. That night Brent also had a strong performance finishing 4th out of over 5,000 finishers in a great time of 15:27! On Saturday it was more of the same at the YAI Central Park Challenge 5k. Eva finished third in her age category and set a new 5k PR of 20:34. Brent continued to demonstrate how competitive he will be in 2012 by finishing second overall in 16:05.

Also running a new 5k PR was Michael Brown, who ran 24:07 to knock 7 seconds off his personal best set last year. The new PR comes at a good time for Michael as he begins training for a sub 4 hour marathon at the Marine Corps Marathon.

Monica Ross showed up the “young kids” at the Twilight 12k, running 44:56 for 12K. Monica bettered my previous time run in 2010 by more than two minutes! Good enough for second place. The only person to finish ahead of Monica was an All American UAA steeplechase runner, but she did take the scalp of an Olympic xc skier and another UAA runner.

After returning from a stress fracture this winter, Pearson Smith won the 29th annual Buffalo, WY Triathlon. This win was a huge testament to Pearson’s dedication to cross training when injured and a good sign that things are on the right track for a marathon this Fall.

Matt Mckeown ran 19:30 for 5th place in his local 5k this weekend. Coming from a 23:48 off the couch back in March, this was his first big step towards a return to. and moving beyond, his old HS personal records. Big congrats, Matt!

Serj Martinez completed the Run for the Roses 5k in Roselle, Illinois in a time of 22:20. That placed him 7th in the 20 -24 year old male age group and 175th overall. While not overly excited about the result, Serj is satisfied with it as he has spent the last couple of weeks dealing with a couple of lower leg issues. With his legs begging to feel better the last few days he now turns his focus to the Chicago 13.1 Marathon this coming Saturday.

Great job to everyone who raced. Keep training hard the next few weeks, racing season has just begun!
