Friday and Saturday (expo days): The race expo and packet pickup are held at McCormick Place, the massive convention center on the lakefront south of Grant Park. Friday is the less crowded day. Collect your bib, timing chip, and gear check bag at the expo — they are not mailed.
Sunday (race day): The marathon starts at 7:30 AM from Grant Park on Columbus Drive. Wave starts begin at 7:30 AM and continue in intervals. Arrive by 6:30 AM to clear security, use porta-potties, and get to your corral.
The start line is in Grant Park on Columbus Drive, right in the heart of downtown Chicago. Driving and parking are not realistic options — extensive road closures begin before dawn and cover most of the Loop and lakefront.
CTA trains (the “L”) are the recommended option. Multiple lines serve the Loop area — the Red, Blue, Brown, Green, Orange, and Pink lines all reach downtown. Trains begin running early on race morning. Plan to arrive at your station by 6:00 AM at the latest. The walk from most Loop stations to the start area takes 10–15 minutes.
Wave starts begin at 7:30 AM with subsequent waves launching at intervals. Corrals close approximately 10 minutes before each wave time — if you miss your corral closure, you cannot start with your assigned wave.
Corrals are arranged on Columbus Drive in Grant Park. Security screening is required to enter the start area. Gear check bags are dropped off before entering the corrals. The start area has porta-potties, but lines grow quickly after 6:30 AM.
The Chicago Marathon provides 20 aid stations spaced approximately every 1–2 miles along the course. Gatorade Endurance is on the left side of the road, water on the right. Gel stations are positioned at miles 12.5, 15.7, and 18.2. Biofreeze is available at mile 21.3.
Medical support is available at every aid station and at mobile units throughout the course. If you need help, raise your hand or stop at any aid station — the medical teams are well-staffed and experienced with the field size.
The finish line is in Grant Park on Columbus Drive, near the 27th Mile Post-Race Party area. Finisher medals, mylar blankets, food, and beverages are distributed in the post-race area immediately south of the finish. Medical tent and podiatry services are available beyond the finish chute.
Gear check bags are available for pickup in the post-race area, organized by bib number. Retrieval can take 15–30 minutes depending on when you finish. Have a specific meeting point pre-arranged with family and friends — cell service is congested near the finish.
