Why “flat” doesn’t mean you can ignore your pacing strategy.

Chicago is the flattest World Major course — only 4 ft of net elevation change and roughly 210 ft of total gain across 26.2 miles. The course has produced 7 world records and sends more runners to Boston than any other marathon in the world. On paper, it’s the perfect PR course.

But flat creates its own problem. Without hills to enforce pace discipline, thousands of runners go out too fast in the electric first miles through the Loop, surge with the massive Boystown crowds at mile 8, and hit the wall somewhere between Pilsen and the South Side. The Chicago Marathon starts in Grant Park on Columbus Drive and immediately zig-zags north into the Loop — the dense downtown core ringed by the elevated train tracks. The first 5 miles cross the Chicago River three times, weave through tight canyon streets lined with skyscrapers, and pass through some of the densest crowd sections on the entire course. The energy is massive, the noise echoes off the buildings, and every instinct says go.

The elevation is essentially flat — a few feet of drop across 7 miles — but the real challenge is pacing discipline. The streets are crowded with 54,000 runners, the start corrals create natural congestion, and the tall buildings on both sides create a canyon effect that amplifies crowd noise. By mile 4 you’re heading north out of the Loop toward Old Town, the crowds thin slightly, and the buildings open up. Mile 6 has the only meaningful climb in this section — about 8 feet — and by mile 7 you’re into Lincoln Park and the race starts to breathe.

⚠️ GPS is useless downtown. Skyscraper canyons bounce GPS signals in every direction — your watch will read wildly inaccurate paces for the first 3–4 miles. Trust the mile markers on the course, not your watch. Don’t react to pace readings until you’re out of the Loop and into the open streets of Old Town.

This is the pancake-flat heart of the Chicago Marathon and home to its most legendary crowd section. Miles 8 and 9 run through Boystown on North Halsted Street — the loudest, most electric stretch on the entire course. Drag queens cheer from stages, block-party speakers pump music into the street, spectators are packed 10 deep on both sides, and the energy is genuinely unlike anything else in marathon running. It’s the kind of atmosphere that makes you feel invincible.

The Old Town wind tunnel effect through narrow streets keeps things cool early, and Lincoln Park provides scenic lakefront views as you head north. The course turns south through Lakeview, and the halfway point falls near mile 13 close to the Chicago River. Crowd energy stays strong through this section, and the flat terrain makes every pace feel easy. That’s exactly the problem.

⚠️ The crowd energy through Boystown is intoxicating. Keep your pacing honest. The marathon doesn’t care how good you feel at mile 9. Every second you bank here above goal pace will be collected with interest in Bronzeville at mile 22.

Energy drops through the West Loop and Greektown at miles 15–16 — fewer spectators, more sun exposure, wider streets with less shade. Little Italy and the UIC Medical District around miles 17–18 are quiet. This is the section where the race gets honest. The flat terrain offers no distraction, the crowd density falls, and runners who went out too fast start to feel it.

Then Pilsen at miles 19–20 provides a massive mood shift. Mariachi bands line the streets, families fill the sidewalks, color and sound flood back into the race. It’s one of the most genuinely uplifting stretches of any World Major marathon. Chinatown at mile 21 follows with lion dancers, a 180-degree turnaround, and the last big crowd energy before the hardest miles of the race.

💡 Pilsen will lift you. Use the energy emotionally, not physically. No pace surges — the hardest 5 miles start immediately after. Let the crowd carry your spirits while your legs stay on plan.

Miles 22–23 through Bronzeville and the IIT campus are the hardest stretch of the Chicago Marathon. The elevation is flat — that’s not the problem. The problem is the combination of no crowds, no shade, 20-plus miles of accumulated fatigue, and the October afternoon sun bearing down on completely exposed streets. This is where the majority of Chicago Marathon runners hit the wall, and it’s where every pacing mistake from the first half gets collected.

Michigan Avenue southbound at mile 24 is desolate — wide, empty, long. The northbound stretch at mile 25 brings the crowds back and you can feel the energy of the finish building. Then comes Roosevelt Road at mile 26 — only about 25 feet of elevation gain, but at mile 26 it feels like a mountain. It’s the only real climb on the entire course and it arrives at the worst possible time. Crest it, turn left onto Columbus Drive, 200 meters to the finish line in Grant Park.

⚠️ Roosevelt Road’s 25-foot climb is the only real elevation you’ll feel all day — and it arrives at mile 26. Short choppy steps, look at the spectators not your feet. Once you crest it, you’re done. The finish line is 200 meters ahead.

Chicago’s October weather is genuinely unpredictable. The 2021 edition was run in 70°F heat with high humidity — conditions that caused widespread slowdowns and medical interventions. In typical years, a cool morning start gives way to moderate afternoon temperatures, but the lakefront wind and sun exposure through the South Side miles can amplify heat effects. BQ Pacing Strategy for Chicago

Chicago’s flat course rewards even pacing more than almost any other marathon. The calculator’s “Ideal” strategy builds in slight negative splits — conservative through the Loop and Boystown (where crowd energy tempts surges), steady through the West Side neighborhoods, and a controlled push from mile 22 onward if the pace bank is positive. For BQ attempts, resist the urge to bank time early. The flat course makes it feel possible, but the desolate South Side miles will collect every second you overspent. Chicago Marathon Logistics

Everything you need to know before race weekend — from the expo at McCormick Place to getting back to your hotel after running through 29 neighborhoods.

📅 Race Weekend Schedule

Friday and Saturday (expo days): The race expo and packet pickup are held at McCormick Place, the massive convention center on the lakefront south of Grant Park. Friday is the less crowded day. Collect your bib, timing chip, and gear check bag at the expo — they are not mailed.

Sunday (race day): The marathon starts at 7:30 AM from Grant Park on Columbus Drive. Wave starts begin at 7:30 AM and continue in intervals. Arrive by 6:30 AM to clear security, use porta-potties, and get to your corral.

💡 Pick up your bib on Friday if possible. Saturday afternoon at McCormick Place is genuinely crowded and the lines are long.

🚗 Getting to the Start

The start line is in Grant Park on Columbus Drive, right in the heart of downtown Chicago. Driving and parking are not realistic options — extensive road closures begin before dawn and cover most of the Loop and lakefront.

CTA trains (the “L”) are the recommended option. Multiple lines serve the Loop area — the Red, Blue, Brown, Green, Orange, and Pink lines all reach downtown. Trains begin running early on race morning. Plan to arrive at your station by 6:00 AM at the latest. The walk from most Loop stations to the start area takes 10–15 minutes.

🏁 Start Line

Wave starts begin at 7:30 AM with subsequent waves launching at intervals. Corrals close approximately 10 minutes before each wave time — if you miss your corral closure, you cannot start with your assigned wave.

Corrals are arranged on Columbus Drive in Grant Park. Security screening is required to enter the start area. Gear check bags are dropped off before entering the corrals. The start area has porta-potties, but lines grow quickly after 6:30 AM.

💧 On-Course Support

The Chicago Marathon provides 20 aid stations spaced approximately every 1–2 miles along the course. Gatorade Endurance is on the left side of the road, water on the right. Gel stations are positioned at miles 12.5, 15.7, and 18.2. Biofreeze is available at mile 21.3.

Medical support is available at every aid station and at mobile units throughout the course. If you need help, raise your hand or stop at any aid station — the medical teams are well-staffed and experienced with the field size.

💡 Gatorade Endurance formula is specific — if you haven’t trained with it, bring your own nutrition rather than relying on the course supply.

🏠 Finish Line

The finish line is in Grant Park on Columbus Drive, near the 27th Mile Post-Race Party area. Finisher medals, mylar blankets, food, and beverages are distributed in the post-race area immediately south of the finish. Medical tent and podiatry services are available beyond the finish chute.

Gear check bags are available for pickup in the post-race area, organized by bib number. Retrieval can take 15–30 minutes depending on when you finish. Have a specific meeting point pre-arranged with family and friends — cell service is congested near the finish.

🏦 Hotels & Transportation

Chicago has extensive hotel options downtown, but race weekend fills up fast — book 6 or more months in advance for reasonable rates and locations. Hotels near the Loop and Grant Park put you within walking distance of the start and finish. The Magnificent Mile, River North, and South Loop neighborhoods are all convenient options.

CTA trains are the best race-day transportation. Road closures are extensive and cover most of the 26.2-mile route through the city. Ride-share pickups after the race are challenging due to street closures and demand — plan to walk or take the “L” back to your hotel.
