15 Personal Bests and several Boston Qualifiers highlight the fantastic weekend of racing for Team RunnersConnect

Krissann Klaus ran the Erie Marathon and finished with a time of 4:06.

I was hoping to make a Boston qualifying time of 4 hours but couldn’t quite get there. I was on track till leg cramps hit me around mile 21. I’m disappointed that I didn’t make my goal but am proud of my effort.

Andrew Goodwin ran the Sri Chimoy Gatineau Trail half marathon and finished with a time of 2:14:02.

This was a trail run in the Gatineau hills – small race, technical and a lot of fun.

Mike Sheridan ran the Cardiff 10k and finished this distance in the time of 39:02.

A race to sharpen up after a block of marathon training never goes amiss…..unless you make it extra hard as I did by going off too fast!

This was a flat, fast course and was the Welsh National Championship with a strong field, so the standard and numbers were high – 4,500 finishers in the 10k. Normally, I run a very controlled race but I remember Coach Sarah saying to me one time “You’ll never know how fast is too fast until you put yourself on the line”. Today was the day to test that to destruction.

My PR pace was 6:09 min/mi for 10k and my first 2 miles here went by in a blur at 6:02 & 6:02. Then 6:12 up a slight slope (5km in 18:53) and another mile in 6:05 min/mi tested my limits …..the next 2 miles back through the town and slightly uphill were the most painful miles as I averaged 6:30 before rallying for the final 1/4 mile.

Over the line in 39:02; 209th out of 4,533 finishers; 3rd V65. Tough, tough race but good to test the limits in a way only runners can know.

Lori Hicks ran the Santa Monica Classic 5k and finished in a time of 40:30. This was a personal record by 2:12.

Struggling over the last several weeks with recurring heel pain, I’ve had to significantly scale back my training and wear comfortable shoes to work. It’s been somewhat demotivating. I was a bit concerned my time would reflect the reduced training but I was happy to know in spite of this improvement was made. I look forward to being 100% soon and ramp up training again so that my next 5k (Hard Rock 5k in LA) will be epic.

Kelsey Barber ran the Cottonwood Canyon Marathon and finished with a time of 3:32:31, which was a PR!

My very first marathon and I qualified for Boston! So exciting. Met my goal!!

Scott Langman ran the Queen City Marathon and finished the race in the time of 3:20:57. This was a new personal record 4 minutes.

This was my third marathon, and my second time running my home town marathon. We had perfect racing weather conditions this year, mostly cloudy and cool. I finished 15th overall and 2nd in my age group, which is a coincidentally identical placing to my spring marathon, but this race is a quite a bit bigger. I was gunning for 3:20, but outpaced that goal during the first half (1:38) and then could not quite hold on to goal pace fighting with dead legs in the last quarter. It was a little surreal around 25k when I caught up to the lead female racer and her pace bike, even passing her for a few kilometers, but she left me in the dust in the last stretch. I still managed to finish strong enough to PR, so it was an excellent result overall. One of these days I’ll pace a marathon smartly, and maybe then I will get that BQ.

Paulo Correia ran the Tallinn Marathon with a finishing time of 4:22:46, which was a PR by 5 minutes!

This was my first serious marathon abroad and my first marathon in Europe ever. The temperature and the track helped me to get my new PR. I have some ups and downs during the last training cycle and a “new pain” at my hips only 10 days before the race. I missed Miami marathon in January and I felt I could miss another international marathon.

I focused on resting and everything went well. I enjoyed a lot every minute of this marathon and my healthy condition since I became a RC member. No pain at all during the race and I felt strong enough to improve my PR. I thank all our coaches and RC members to this amazing community of runners!

Grace Martinez ran the Lehigh Valley Marathon and finished in a time of 3:42:47. This was a PR by 8 minutes!

I was really nervous about this race because I originally wanted to qualify for Boston with it. But I decided before the race that I just really wanted to really enjoy it and not put too much pressure on myself. That decision helped me a lot. I did end up enjoying it and loving my run. Eventually I will qualify for Boston, but I really want to enjoy getting there and I am.

Jerry Burnham ran the Running of the Bulls 5k, finishing this distance in the time of 23:17.

Due to 9 week old twins and their associated feeding requirements, I completely forgot about this race until the day before. 8.30 start with barely any breeze, 29.2°C, a dew point of 24.2°C and relative humidity at 79%. I had a 9 mile easy run scheduled, so I tried to hang back just a little, but still came 17 of 133 with a time 52 secs slower than my best 5k 3 years ago, and won my age group.

Heather Martin ran the Erie Marathon and finished this race event in the time of 3:55:55.

I really wanted a BQ. I wish I knew what happened. You basically run 2 loops and the head games started early… By mile 9. I think in part – because the course was marked for the initial round but then a short distance ahead the course was marked for our second time around. So for example at mile 9 a few feet ahead it also said 22. Then I was like geez if I feel like this now… I got lightheaded which is not normal for me. And I also had some gut issues so the fuel didn’t sit well.

Rodney Champagne ran the Erie Marathon with a finishing time of 4:24:35.

Ran on pace till 13 miles and just got over-heated. Felt really strong, just felt the heat taking it’s toll. The next 6 miles was a recovery run slowly to cool down. The last 6 miles felt really good, but at a slower pace maintaining my body temperature. My strength felt fantastic, albeit at a slow pace. Just wasn’t my day. However I felt my stamina in the heat getting better from previous races, probably from the increased fitness.

Christopher Stacey ran the Cardiff 10K and completed this distance in the time of 1:03:20, which was a PR!

James Dunnigan ran the Skagit Valley Flats Marathon in Burlington, WA and finished with a PR of 5 minutes.

This was my first attempt to qualify for Boston. Also I beat my Marathon PR set when I was 29 🙂

Maad Khalil ran the The Great North Run Half Marathon and finished with a time of 01:54:02.

Over 41000 runners participated in this years event and it is seen as one of the largest half marathon events in the world. Great support from the local people along the route and we have nice memories of the place from previous participation of the event. This year it carries a special weight as we used it as a tune up for the NYC marathon my wife and I are doing in Nov 2016. It filled us with great positivity to take on the next event.

Kumara Raghavan ran the Chennai Trail Half Marathon and finished in a time of 1:50:15.

Had no time goal in mind and set out to enjoy myself on the trail and the landscape views it offered. It began in the utter darkness of 5AM which slowed down the pace for the first two kms. The race had over 800 participants, but all those over 43 years of age were classified as veterans. I just made it to the veteran category as a result and ended up first, which was an unexpected bonus. 🙂 Very well organised run by the Chennai Trekkers club.

Ann Kask ran the Women for Women 10k Trail Challenge and finished in 1:08:05.

This is a race I have been doing for at least 10 years as it is a fundraiser to provide a bursary for a single Mom wanting to attend college. The course takes us through bush, across creeks, up and down hills, and up and down a retired logging road. The goal is to have fun, One cannot go any faster than the person in front of you for a lot of it, then one makes up time on the more open stretches. I think I have always been the oldest person running the race.

Tony Pallotta ran a 5k in Baltimore and finished with a time of 21:42, which was a PR by 1:13.

I really wanted to run well to test my fitness and almost everything this week was a battle. Missed my race this morning, had to fill in for main sermon at church. So, at 9:30pm I ran this on the TM at the gym. But, I felt really great! I put the TM incline at 1.0. I was a little too conservative the first mile 7:22; second mile 7:03; last 1.1 miles 7:17 for a total time of 21:42. A PR of 1:13! My first race with RC was a 5k last Feb. was 23:06. So I am very happy with my progress with RC. Thanks to the coaches and RC team!!

Cynthia Morris ran the Mckenzie River 50k trail race, finishing this distance in the time of 5:52:34.

I had screamed through this race in 2002 and remembered it as a fast, easy downhill trail race. It is now a lottery and very hard to get into so I was thrilled when I got in. My brain kept telling me I was still 44 so I was hoping for a similar experience and a close to fast time. The trail ended up being exceptionally rocky/rooty and we were constantly going in and out if the sunlight making it hard to see all the fun obstacles. Well, after a 2900+ foot climb in the first 10 miles I knew I was going to have a tough time, one bee sting at Mile 2 in the back of the arm. Another one in the other arm around mile 10. Then tripping and falling in a sticker bush with a huge calf cramp. Then 2 yellow jackets got caught in my hair and stung my head all up. It was so painful I forgot my sore Achilles until I kicked a rock and my right one screamed. I hobbled for awhile then told myself I could whine and quit or pull up my panties and get going. I hit 16 miles in 3:15 and had to try not to be upset about the time. It was a gradual rolling downhill after mile 10 but enough climbs to really make the legs ache. I thought I was alone as I neared the finish when 2 ladies came up behind me–one I guessed in my age group. I picked up the pace to hold them off but alas with .5 miles to go they passed me. I ended up 2/14 in my age group, 10/44 masters, 27/76 women, 86/178 starters. I was disappointed in the time but I have ran more ultra’s this summer than I ever have and I believe I was just carrying too much fatigue. My head said 44 but my body said 57.

Patrick Callahan ran the George Washington Patriot Run 5k with a finishing time of 33:16.

Inaugural year for this race and there were over 2,000 entries. Temperature was 80 at the start which is mostly downhill to the turn-around then back. Just took it easy to keep the focus on my goal race in 4 weeks. Field friendly so ended up 17/37 in my age group.

Paul Kilbank ran the Toronto Island Run 10k and finished with a time of 56:09, which was a PR!

Today was a tune-up for an upcoming HM in mid October. My goal was to check my fitness and see if I could average 5:40 which would make me comfortable with that pace as my HM stretch goal (yes, targeting that magical 2:00 finish).

The plan was 5:50 for 2km then 5:40 for 6km then 5:30 for 2km. Started faster than hoped – you probably haven’t heard this story before … but was able to hold pace until a windy 9km mark but then back on track for a strong 5:20 last km. Okay, confession time, I was huffing from 8km onwards but felt I could have cranked it up slightly still at the end. But the goal was to gauge my fitness not set a PR … wait 1st 10K … so it was a 56:09 chip time PR 🙂

Jim Paterson ran the Remember The Fallen Memorial 5K, finishing this distance in the time of 25:03.

This is a great race put on by Northport first responders each year around 9/11. Based on my training I decided my goal would be 25:00 and finishing in 25:03 was satisfying. This was the first 5K that I felt in total control. I hit my splits within seconds and was able to get faster as the race progressed. Also managed 3rd in my age group which was a bonus. I think I could plan for a faster time in future races. Thanks coaches for putting together the training plan.

David Sacoman ran the Ventura Marathon and finished in a time of 3:19:34.

Comfortably qualified for Boston. Slower than my best but that was on downhill St. George course. Would have been faster had it not been for the four stops for stomach issues. I really ran fast and well. This was my first Runner’s Connect race and the training was awesome. I was so well prepared and surprised to see a couple of 7:15 miles near the end to try and make up the time. If I can solve my stomach issues I can make some serious time improvement.

Janis Crum ran the Giants Half Marathon and finished this race in the time of 2:12.

I have been injured with a hamstring strain for the past 3 weeks, so I haven’t completed a long run in that long. I ran the race as prescribed – slow for the first few miles, and then, when I felt comfortable, ran my goal pace, with a sprint at the final 2 miles.

Troy Hanson ran the Jeff Winter City of Lakes Half Marathon and finished in 1:47:27.

Great weather around beautiful city lakes and parks. Smaller race (capped at 1500 racers). 14 seconds off PR

Bonnie Galvin ran the Lake Placid Classic 10k and finished this distance in the time of 47.38.

As like most races in the Adirondacks, this race starts and ends on hills. The race started at 9am and it was already 70 degrees with bright sunshine. The views throughout this course are beautiful and the race swag and volunteers are top notch.

Given the conditions, I feel I ran a smart race and although not a PR, I finished 5th female overall and 1st in AG!

Peg DeBiasi ran the Harrisburg Half Marathon and finished with a time of 3:03.

This half marathon was with the sole purpose of running with Athletes Serving Athletes, and organization that helps the disabled pursue their dreams of competing. My role was as one of 4 Wingmen pushing our athlete Ashley and listening to her giggle and cheer the entire way. Ashley has some cognitive challenges but is mobile so from time time to time she got out and ran. Ashley and her team ran across the finish line together, she ran the last 2 tenths.

Pushing 135lbs is hard work, my arms and quads are sore. Hardest and slowest half marathon I have done but the most rewarding.

Dean Morley ran the Great North Run Half Marathon and completed this race event in the time of 1:29.

Great North Run half marathon – billed as world’s largest (57,000) so one ticked off the list!.. 🙂

Also, this was my first ‘race’ after April’s London marathon (2.56) and subsequent Achilles problems. So, running just under 1.30 is a pleasing result. Holding off the celebrations though on the achilles until tomorrow to see how it feels in the morning, but fingers crossed it will be ok and I can focus on a decent run up to my November marathon.

Rosie Kyes ran the Seasons 20K and finished with a time of 1:55.45. This was a personal record by 6 minutes.

I did this race last year with the USATF NE. My time was 2:01 its a very hilly course, I was actually not racing today. I raced 6 days ago and this was just a slow run for me ( I was a little shocked when I finished and saw the big clock with the time of 1:55. I couldn’t believe it. Thank you RC coaches. I’m amazed at how good I can handle the hills)

Rosie Mitchell ran the Annual Rooneys Extreme 15k with a finishing time of 1:25:20.

I didn’t quite equal my time in this race last year (which WAS a personal best for this distance though we ran the route in the reverse direction from today’s race). It’s a really tough route as there are lots of really steep hills. What made it special was how easy I found it this time! Despite the hills. Have been training really hard for my upcoming fifty km trail race which is next weekend and today showed me how it is paying off as it really seemed so easy to run up the steep hills. I was finishing strong and had picked up my pace. Suddenly I realised my rival (and of course friend too) Alice was right behind me. It was Alice who beat me to win the trail race we are both running again next weekend. So I put on this huge sprint and finished before her! I did not think I could beat Alice in the upcoming trail ultra marathon but now I believe I actually have a fighting chance!! I had also run for two and a half hours the previous day to the Rooneys Extreme 15, from 11 am to 1.30 in the hottest part of the day as Important heat training for this very tough trail race which will be in very hot conditions – but in spite of having done this less than 24 hours before the race was still only two minutes off my time for last year.

Brad Wolfram ran the Brain Power 5K, 10K, Survivor Stride & Kids Run (10k) and finished in a time of 54:56.

This BrainPower event had a 5k, 10k, kids fun run and lots of walkers. Lost my mother to brain cancer in 2005 so this event has special meaning. Beautiful 72 degree sunny morning in central TX.

The 243 runners in 10k started first, 350 in 5k 10 minutes after. Out and back course that 10k had to do twice. Things got really congested on the second lap needing to navigate around walkers, forget about the water stops. Chip time for first 5k split was 26:50, 2nd lap was 28:06. 10k finish chip time of 54:56, good enough for 2nd place men 50-54.

I’ve run this same course in other events and should have incorporated that knowledge in to my pacing strategy vs just using pace calculator. Things slipped going up incline ~ mile 4 and I didn’t recover well enough. While a little frustrated that I could have run this better, I am pleased with best 10k time in past 6 years and beat most recent 10k in April by 11 seconds.

Manos Drakopoulos ran the Navarino Challenge Trail HM and finished in 2:01:08.

We started off at 8.30am after Dean Karnazes gave us go!! It was quite humid and hot day. The most difficult and demanding part was after the 5k mark where we had to run on a sandy beach and sandy hills afterwards, followed by a very narrow trail for almost 4k!

After that segment I had to work my way into faster speed slowly in order to give my body the chance to adapt. Temps were rising but still I managed to go faster and faster and peak during the final 4k as I had planned from the beginning. I believe I had a great race and I am satisfied with my performance given the terrain and weather!!

This race’s moto was Dean’s quote “Run when you can, walk if you have to, crawl if you must; just never give up” well I ain’t giving up easily nowadays with RC family backing me up!

Michael Beavers ran the Eastern Illinois 5k Classic and finished with a time of 26:31, which was a PR by 0:01:56.

This was a run with my son and 1st of planned annual races for my Alma mater (Go Panthers!) also the college my son is attending now. I had already planned on taking this on slow due to some Achilles issues that I have been trying to heal from. I was going to run at 9:00/m or a little under, of course it started to rain about 1 min before start. When I got started and checked my watch I was running sub 8:00/m which was much faster than I wanted, really worked on getting it slowed down. Next check of the watch put me about 8:45/m so, I just decided to hang at this pace since I wasn’t really in much pain. As I passed a guy he asked about our time and I told him we were on course for sub 28 min finish. He just hung behind me and I would update him on our pace and finish time occasionally which seemed to keep him motivated. At a little before the three mile mark I told him we were gonna sprint the last 100 yards. He said he was up for it so off we went. Ended up with about a 2 min PR. My son PRed by about 4 min. Won his age division and got 16th overall. I was so proud!

Achilles a little sore today, but I really feel I didn’t injure it anymore. This was a great day. Thanks coaches and RCers for listening to my whining about being injured.

Elise Reitshamer ran the Run to the Rock Half Marathon and finished in a time of 2:00:06.

Best thing about this race (which was a tune up for an upcoming marathon) is the confidence it has given me for doing well in the marathon next month. A very hilly course, which I read about but disregarded when looking at the elevation before the race. I followed the race plan from Coach Jamie (thanks!) but as I began to realize just how huge the hills were (plus just how much the heat was affecting me), I went by effort level instead of following the paces for miles 3-10. The best part of this race was my performance in the last 3+ miles. Each mile was faster than the last, I passed so many people I couldn’t even count (including those who passed me earlier in the race!)

The time wasn’t what I would have liked, but to be one of the few who didn’t have to walk the hills (or at all!) it was priceless!

Nicole Gerrish ran the Lehigh Valley Via Marathon with a finishing time of 3:27:11. This was a new personal record by 4:49.

This was my first race since starting training with RC, but it’s my 21st marathon overall. The feedback and support from the coaches and members has been super helpful throughout the training cycle, and I couldn’t have imagined just how training would prepared me mentally and physically. It was remarkable just how in-control I felt. I’m a believer in RC!

Rooney Kelly ran the Brantford WorkWays Foundation 16km Trail Race and finished with a time of 1:44:51.

I have never done a 10 mile trail race before which made it special because it was a new challenge and experience. It was very hot and humid but the route was beautiful minus the hills. I placed second in my age group which was a surprise because I did not feel this was a very good run for me.

Joyce Holz ran the Revel Big CottonWood Half Marathon and finished this race in the time of 1:49:07. This was a PR by 4 minutes.

Half PR, first RC race, coming back after second Hamstring injury. I know this is fast course that I want to use to qualify for NY marathon which I did with 5 minutes to spare. I have been battling injuries last 3 years, I really did not think I could PR after 12 years running and getting older. I went into this race having a lot of doubt if I could get that 1:54 qualifying time so I started conservatively trailing the 1:50 pacer. Following RC coaches instructions of pushing the pace at mile 4, I left the 1:50 pacer and never saw him again. Last 3 miles were harder after all the downhill to run flat to uphill. Lots of GI cramps but I pushed it through mentally.

Tony Williams ran the Big Cottonwood Marathon and finished with a time of 3:36.33.

I ran this very well until I fell apart at mile 22. Normally, I seem to fall apart at 18, so this was an improvement but it was a disappointing finish. Wanted to qualify for Boston but came in 6 mins short.

Christian Messerschmidt ran the REI 10K Trail for Ragnar Carolina and finished in 43:30.

Just a hard 10K tempo effort while promoting the inaugural RAGNAR Carolina next month, managed to surge for 3rd place during the last mile.

Anders Ohman ran the Stockholm Half-marathon and finished with a time of 2:11:28, which was a PR by 1:29.

Wonderful weather with 15000 runners and great crowds. Also a beautful course mostly by the water. Highly recommended for everyone.

Ron Dawson ran the Last Chance BQ2 Grand Rapids Marathon, finishing this distance in the time of 3:24:28. This was a massive PR by 16 minutes!

I Qualified for Boston, ran a new PR, and did it when the temp was 78 f and some rain. A lot of runners were having problems with the heat and humidity. I was able to run my fastest marathon ever, and did not bonk, and ran strong until the finish. I attribute this to the training plan from RC. Thanks to all the coaches and the community for all the support. I am going to Boston!
