Team RunnersConnect ends May with a bang as athletes brings in 17 PRs over the weekend

Simeon Bayles ran the Woodstock 15k and finished with a time of 1:48:52.

1st AG/8th Overall. Was racing for place and not a PR on this day/course. Mid 80s and hazy/humid with a course that never stopped turning or going up and down. I’ve gotten really fit this spring and while it would have been nice to have a PR course/conditions to prove it I needed every bit of it to hold it together for this race. I ignored my pace and ran to effort/sensation which allowed me to put in an “evenish” effort and hold off 2nd and 3rd in my age group by less than one minute. Thanks to Coach Danny for getting me this far and looking forward to putting more work in this summer for the fall.

Lisa Patel ran the Bay Shore Half Marathon, finishing this distance in the time of 2:38:27.

This race is run on the peninsula in Grand Traverse Bay. We picked this race for the cooler weather that we expected in Northern Michigan. Unfortunately, there was a heat wave there and we did not get any cool weather. The race started with a hills for the first 2 miles and leveled out for the remainder of the race. This was the most beautiful road coarse that I have been on as it ran next to the bay. I am not happy with my time as it was significantly over my 2:19 PR and it is not clear as to why this happened. I hope to figure this out in the next training cycle.

We also decided to run another half the next day at Crystal Mountain. My times showed the fatigue from the previous day and the trail, but it was fun and the views made it a race that I would go run again.

Thomas Kabaki Wamwea ran the Edinburgh Half Marathon and finished in a time of 2:30. This was a personal record by 18 minutes.

Was able to maintain a good speed especially in the fast half. The route has scenic views especially past the the beach. Left gluten stopped firing optimally reducing my pace. Began cramping with 3 miles to go further reducing my speed. Very enjoyable race, mostly flat and gently sloping. This was an accomplishment bringing down my speed by 1 hour compared to my first half marathon 21 months ago.

Tara Gale ran the Parkrun 5k and finished with a time of 21.09, which was a PR by 2 seconds.

This was the first park run/race since my hamstring hiatus so it was interesting to see where I was back to after 2 months off followed by 2 months injury free running after rehab. I was pleased, it was an improvement! I’m still aiming for a 20 something result though.

Jeff Polak ran the Mountains to the Beach Marathon and finished in a time of 3:45:28. This was a massive PR by 40 minutes!

I was really happy with my performance. I never really pushed myself. I just maintained a nice easy pace throughout the race and I had plenty left at the end. I felt so strong the last six miles and just got stronger as I was passing so many runners during the home stretch.

Rebecca Dorr ran the Buffalo Marathon with a finishing time of 04:27:01, which was a PR!

It was hot. Even stepping outside at 5:30 am I could feel the humidity and it was already warm. I had to throw my original plan of trying for 4:00:00 out the window and just run by feel. This was the hardest thing I have ever done. I had a good first half. Then the heat set in, with little shade and a head full of doubt I struggled through the hills and heat in the second half. I listened to my body and when I got dizzy/tingles in hands/nauseous, etc.. I walked. I was so thankful for all the course support, both the volunteers and the people of Buffalo were so outstanding to the runners. SO much support out there!

I really want to thank all the coaches here on RC for their guidance and support on the way to my first Marathon. Thank you Coach Michael for helping me with a race plan and calming my nerves in the final weeks of training. Coach Danny, thanks for all the practical advice you always give. Thanks Coach Jamie for the optimism and support you bring to the community. Coach Sarah, you have given me so much inspiration on this journey to my first marathon. Thank you for your supportive words and encouragement.

Ramona Dragnea ran the Vermont City Marathon and finished with a time of 4:55:40.

This race was special because not only I ran it with my husband and it was his first marathon, but also because I wanted my last street marathon before switching to trails to be a beautiful one. I really could have not asked for more, Burlington delivers an amazing race and the community support is awesome! It was a scorching hot from the start and humidity did not help either and before noon the organizers closed the race due to extreme heat. A few runners continued their run to the finish and my husband and I were among them.

I am very glad I got to meet one fellow RC in person, which actually makes this destination marathon worth traveling for.

Romaine Lewis ran the Steve Smith Family Foundation Lace Up Son Family 5k and finished in 20:44. This was a PR by 1 minute 15 seconds.

I ran my 1st 5k since 1992 when I ran high school cross country on March 5th of this year, finishing in 21:59. I’m training for a 5k on June 18th and this race was previously scheduled. I was not sure how I would run it (pace, etc) because I didn’t want to hurt myself prior to my goal race in less than 3 weeks.

However, after a warm up and some dynamic stretching, I went out with the lead pack and settled in at about a 6:40 1st mile and felt good, so I basically maintained that pace until the end. The 3rd mile was majority uphill, which I knew nothing about since I didn’t scout the course. Because of this, I didn’t not negative split this race. I came in at 20:44, which is a PR by a minute and 15 seconds. Back to training tomorrow; 19 days until cracking that 20 minute barrier!!!

Lisa Passalacqua ran the Mountains to Beach Marathon and finished this race in the time of 3:52:41. This was a new personal record by 14 minutes.

This was a big PR for me and an important race. I have been trying for the past few years to qualify for Boston and based on my age for the 2017 Boston, this time is 7:20 mins. under my qualifying time, hopefully its enough! I owe it all to this program- I had a hard time trusting it (no 20 milers, slower paces for tempo runs) but it worked beautifully. THANK YOU RC!!!!!

Kathy Balme ran the Ottawa Marathon and finished in a time of 4:39:53.

I found this marathon to be my most difficult because of the heat. I knew going in that I was not going to do my Plan A (BQ, which would be sub-4 for me), but that I was going to have to take it slow and steady, so I was kind of hoping for a 4:12 to 4:15 range. Well, I did the slow, but not the steady!! I crashed and burned in the second half, and ended up really slowing down, walking a fair bit. I did learn a lot though, so that’s something positive to take away from it.

Peg Hoffman ran the Bayshore Marathon with a finishing time of 3:50:57. This was a personal record by 21 minutes.

I had an ambitious goal of getting my first BQ. I knew that for that to happen all the stars would have to align (meaning perfect race conditions) and that with the forecast of a hot day I should probably have gone to plan B. But I decided to risk it and go for it nevertheless. I ran the first half perfectly according to my plan. This was an out and back course and right after the turnaround I started slipping. I don’t know if the timing was in part because I had to slow down to turnaround or mentally knowing I had to cover the same distance at the same pace. By mile 17 all hopes of a BQ were out the door and I was just trying to finish with some dignity. My legs were incredibly tired and although I was giving a lot of effort just wouldn’t move at the pace I wanted them to. I’d like to blame it all on the heat but I think my legs were just not up for the task I was asking.

Now the positive… I ran this same race last year and despite tougher conditions did better by 21 minutes. Last year I was a casual runner and I didn’t start to take my running more seriously until the fall. I also ran with a dear friend. He made this race all about me – paced me, carried my fuel and encouraged me all the way. It was wonderful to share this experience with a friend, even if it didn’t go as planned.

Jeff Wettig ran the Bayshores Half Marathon and finished this distance in the time of 2:00:00.

Saturday I ran the Bayshores Half, which is a wonderfully pretty coarse and layout along the eastern shore of the Grand Traverse peninsula. The Half is pretty hilly for the first couple miles, then fairly flat along the shore. Pulled my right hamstring (again!) on mile 6, but was able to finish just about 4 mins from a PR, in 2:00:00.

The next day, Sunday, Lisa Patel and I ran a very wonderful trail Half just south of Traverse City called the Half Mitten at the Crystal Mountain Ski Resort. I finished in 2:13:57; not bad considering the hamstring issue and additional challenges of the trails.

Howard Harrell ran the Staint Francis & Clare 5K and finished the race event in the time of 18:30.7.

It was close by. It was for the whole family, so my wife and four kids were there too. I was disappointed with my time. 18:30 is barely a 6:00 mile. I run better / faster on my Tuesday -Thursday hard runs. I was a bite tired on Saturday. The late start of the race (10:45 AM) allowed the temps get to 79F. Not normally too warm, but it really seemed to affect me today. The first mile of 5:45 feel fast, then it only got slower from there. I just need to get use to the warmer weather. I’ll be fine.

Cynthia Morris ran the Spray Half Marathon and finished with a time of 1:48:38.

This was a reunion of old college runners that used to go every year to this race 35 yrs ago. It is in a tiny town in NE Oregon and is followed by a rodeo. It was a tough race as the first 3 miles were downhill and then it had a gradual uphill finishing higher than we started. The road was windy and the corners were severely canted which made it tough to run. I had had hamstring and knee issues in the 2 weeks leading up to the race and wasn’t sure if I could even run. After 3 miles of limping, it loosened up and quit hurting. I was very happy with my time as I have done little speed work focusing on training for my ultra’s. We had a wonderful weekend reminiscing with our old friends, laughing about how old and slow we are compared to the “good ole days”.

John Chalikias ran the Zeyxia Dias 10k and completed this distance in the time of 44:30.

First time running a 10k track race. Today was not time for PB since was a hot day. I understand that it would be tough, when I tried to increase my pace on 2nd Km. So I took the decision that today it wasn’t time for speed but strategy. I followed first two runners but first one was bit fast. Managed to stick with 2nd runner and at 8Km as I felt good I speed up. Happy to finish strong and did my faster Km at the last one, finished 2nd in my row.

Tom McCray ran the Doylestown 5K, finishing this distance in the time of 20:42.

Tune up race went well. No PR, but happy with the effort and that I improved my time for this course by almost a minute.

Max Charbonneau ran the Ottawa Half Marathon with a finishing time of 02:17. This was a new personal record by 15 minutes.

I got injured on my first one (hyper extended my knee while jumping off a sidewalk to pass someone). This one was injury free – slower than I’d hoped for but injury free!

Tim Warren ran the Boston’s Run to Remember Half Marathon and finished with a time of 1:56:11.

While this half marathon was the slowest one I have run in about 5 years, it was successful in one sense. In the Boston Marathon this year I dropped out with extreme fatigue after 17.5 miles. In retrospect I think I started too fast, paying little attention to my pace and HR and I was in trouble by the 10K mark. Yesterday I paid more attention and slowed my pace when HR got higher than what I can sustain. I feel that I ran a smart race and got the fastest time I was capable of that particular day. And proudly, I finished.

Heather Joe ran the Memorial Day Trail Race 10k and finished in a time of 1:34:20.

Memorial day trail race with super steep climbs frontloaded. Stayed with hubby the whole way up the mountain to make sure he made it. The trails were very technical and the descent was scary steep as well so this was a really fast hike haha. Almost 1000 feet in elevation gain. Still learning trails so ran this as a fun run. Placed in the middle of the pack and the 13th female. I had so much fun on this race I was in heaven.

Paulo Correia ran the Rio de Janeiro Marathon and finished this race in the time of 4:38:22.

This was my third marathon in the last 12 months. Rio de Janeiro Marathon happened during my birthday and I had a very unusual party. I had a solid strategy to run the course below 4h30m, but the temperature was too high (25oC/78F) and I need to slow down after the 32K. I crossed the finish line where my wife and daughter were waiting for me. This moment was very special and will be in my memory forever. The day after was better than I could expect because I have only mild pain in my legs.

I thank all RC community and coaches for all support and guidance. I started to plan a new training cycle to achieve my goal: qualify to Boston until 2020.

Stuart Marker ran the Edinburgh Marathon and finished with a time of 2:47:46.

Super happy with this race for many reasons. First it was first marathon in the UK so my parents came to watch along with a couple of friends. On the running front, it was the first marathon in 3 that I haven’t blown up with cramp in the hamstrings, so whether it was the fast finish long runs or the strength training that made the difference it was quite a relief.

The race was good, after NYC always a surprise at how relaxed other marathons are. The course was flat and whilst we ran into a light wind it wasn’t gale force. The only bad thing was that whilst there were mile markers and timing pads to run over there were no clocks out on the course. Also no sports drinks either – just water and some brand of gel. Crowds were good all along the course and there was plenty of support.

Dan O’Carroll ran the Field of Heroes 5k and finished this distance in the time of 20:18.

The race finished in a field of more than 3,000 American Flags to honor the fallen. More than 200 of the 1,400 participants were veterans. Including myself. The course was pretty flat and I started out fast. I need to work on starting slower. My goal was 20:00, so I fell a little short. It was a fun race and I look forward running it again next Memorial Day weekend.

Meg Ling ran the Strawberry Festival 10k and completed this race event in the time of 46:10.

This was a hilly race and I felt strong the whole time. I ran relaxed and steady on the hills and felt like I was fit enough to go faster on the downhills but took my time on the hills. I was SO happy to run this race with confidence and uninjured!

Hein Mynhardt ran the Saskatoon Marathon and finished with a time of 3:27:49. This was a personal record by 12 minutes!

Finally got my BQ time

Scott Langman ran the Saskatchewan Marathon and finished with a time of 3:24:43. This was a new personal record by 17 minutes!

For my second marathon, I was targeting sub-3:30 and mostly just hoping to avoid the bonk. On those levels (and more) it was a complete success. I had a better nutrition plan and maintained a good energy level throughout. I also executed the race plan well in the early going, keeping the pace conservative. I felt great for the majority of the race, so got a little carried away in the middle third. Leg fatigue kicked in with seven kilometers to go, and I barely held on through the last five kilometers–which were mostly frustratingly uphill–but I had enough time in the bank that I knew I’d still crush my goal even as I slowed way down. I finished 15th overall and 2nd in my age group, which was very exciting, especially the ten seconds where I stood on a podium to get my prize. In February, I was hobbled by a high hamstring injury and didn’t expect I’d even be able to run this race at all, so this result is simply fantastic in every way.

Brandon Tuss ran the PNC Speed Street 5K and finished in a time of 21:37, which was a PR by 1:45.

Had been looking forward to this 5K for a few weeks now and knew that it would be a fast track based on my running the same race last year. The course was basically the same, with the first mile being mostly flat and a sloping downhill, the second mile mostly uphill, and a flat finish. Ran hard the whole way and missed an age-group podium slot by a single place. Kicked hard at the end to PB at this distance. All in a days work!

Pebble Williams ran the Boston Run to Remember Half Marathon with a finishing time of 2:25:25.

Everytime I got anxious about my pace or how I felt, I made myself relax. Then, I actually performed better. I had strong legs at the end for a triumphant finish and hit my goal time exactly.

Stephane Rinkin ran the 10km Shanghai and finished with a time of 39:59, which was a PR!

This was my first 10km race without any specific training and my time is clearly amazing for a first one. Very happy and this gives me a lot of confidence for my next half where I hope to improve my PR to 1h25min.

Daniel Tanguay ran the Ottawa marathon and finished this race in the time of 3:48:24, which was a PR by 21 seconds.

Did not run for 5 days (stomach flu plus at the end the heat was too much). So it did not go as planned but I did do my PR by 21 seconds!

Stephanie Sherman ran the Boston Run to Remember Half Marathon and finished with a time of 1:40:59. This was a PR by 3 minute 3 seconds.

My marathon finish last fall was a coup de grace to my year battling (and conquering) cancer. With that said, my finish was less than stellar time-wise and put me on the bench for two months due to overuse injury. It was important to me to race my potential today. This training cycle was great because I remained injury free, and this particular race helped me get my running mojo back. Feels good to succeed! My former half marathon PR was 1:44:03 so I beat that time by over 3 minutes!

Nicola Tortora ran the Edinburgh Marathon and finished the race event in the time of 3:35. This was a new personal record by 7 minutes!

I’m very happy since I had suffered IT band injury 3 week agò and did not run much. During the race it hurted a little bit at km 5-7 but then the course became flat and felt much better. 3:35 anyway for me is 5 minutes lower than Boston qualification time for my age group… So I feel I have given all that I could. Will travel this week in Scotland for vacation with my wife as a reward 🙂

Grant Hughes ran the YMCA Spring Run 10k, finishing this distance in the time of 40:13.

First place overall by 2 1/2 minutes! This was a tuneup race that I trained through on the way to a marathon in three weeks. The day started out with pretty much perfect temperature (11C or 52F), calm winds and overcast skies. The only thing that detracted from perfect was the 100% humidity since it had rained just before sunrise. The start was kind of wonky, since they lined everyone up according to race distance, with the 15 and 20k racers starting in front of the 10k and the 5k behind, all to start at the same time. The course was mostly flat, but at about 4 miles it takes a nose dive, where keeping in control slows you down, then a half mile later climbs about 85 ft in about two blocks, which really slowed me down and made me more tired for the last mile than I would have been on a completely flat course. After the big one, there were a few bumps and valleys and I pressed as hard as I could without any threats behind me. Overall a great tune-up.

Camil Iovanas ran the Foulées Villennoise 5k and finished this distance in the time of 30:20, which was a PR!

It was a hard race for me. It started with 900 m of uphill. So I had to slow down from my target pace of 6:10. Then I speed up to try to catch up but at 3 km it was an uphill in the woods where I almost lost my breath. I finished my first race (52th on general and 11th on my age category) so I’m very, very happy 🙂

Elise Reitshamer ran the Johnny Kelley Half – The Great Hyannis Road Races and finished in 1:59:47.

I run this race every year as a start to the summer and I love it. The course is nice not tons of spectators but very friendly and nice people all around. This year it was 66 degrees and bright sunny. It felt hotter than it was and I definitely slowed over the multiple rolling hills in the middle, but I felt pretty good and tried to keep my pace challenging yet relatively easy.

Stacy Thomas ran the BratFest Bun Run 10k and finished in a time of 49:22.

It was a tough race almost from the very beginning because it was so warm, humid and worst of all was the 15-25mph wind. But I kept fighting and only had 2 people pass me during the 2nd half of the race and I passed one of them before the end of the race. I finished 17th overall, 7th female and 1st in my age/gender group.

Carmen Lopez-Acevedo ran the Carrera del Agua 5k and finished the distance in the time of 25:57, which was a PR by 1:28.

My first official 5km and I finished 8th in my age group and 68th woman out of 779! Really happy with the result. I was hoping to get under 27 minutes, started out too fast in km 1 which I completed in 4:50 and it was uphill and started to feel sick. Luckily 2 and 3 downhill so slowed down and recovered, by the time I was on 4km I knew I was on track so gave it my all. The weather was chilly but perfect for running.

Alex Lim ran the Sundown Marathon, finishing this distance in the time of 4hr 34min.

Targeted a finishing time of 4hr 30min. Finished in 4hr 34min. Personally I think it was a decent accomplishment given that its my first marathon. Could have executed the pacing a little better and be a little more hardworking with strength training during the training but I guess that’s where we learn. Will be targeting a 4hr 25min to 4hr 30min for the next one.

Andy Kohl ran the Lew Blond Memorial 5K and completed this race event in the time of 23:16.

This is a community race at the school district where I work. It’s in the memory of a wonderful teachers / athlete, who died of ALS. I volunteer at the event every year, and seldom have a chance to actually run. I joined at the last minute and got a chance to see the neighborhoods around our school from a different lens. Finished 4th in my age group and felt awesome at the finish, seeing so many familiar faces cheering.
